BX5, TAIWAN. Jimmy, BX5AA, will be active during the CQWW WPX SSB Contest

* DX DINNER BANQUET. Joe Pater, W8GEX, Secretary for the SouthWest Ohio
DX Association, reports (edited): "The SOUTHWEST OHIO DX Association
(SWODXA) is pleased to again sponsor the DX Dinner ™, held in conjunc-
tion with the 2011 Dayton Hamvention®. The dinner will be held on
Friday, May 20th, 2011. This year the dinner will be at the Dayton
Marriott, 1414 S. Patterson Blvd., Dayton, OH 45409.
We are excited about our new venue. It is less than five minutes
from our previous location, has a much larger capacity, and the dining

H4, SOLOMON ISLANDS. Darren, VK4FEAT, is now active as H44DX. His length
of stay on the island was not provided. Activity over the past week has

IOTA NEWS....................
AF-032. Sam, F6AML, is once again active from Jambiani on Zanzibar
Island (WLOTA 1080) until January 24th. He is signing as 5H1Z
and using a FT-857 into a HF9V vertical and dipole, so look
for him on 80-10 meters using CW and SSB. Suggested frequencies
are:
CW - 3525, 7025, 10120, 14005, 18085, 21005, 24905 and 28005
SSB - 3755, 7055, 14260, 18128, 21260, 24935 and 28460 kHz

EU-012. Members of the "Worked All Britain" (WAB) are planning to
activate Fair Isle, Scotland, using the callsign GS4WAB and GS7WAB
between August 16-22nd. They plan to activate the rare WAB squares
HZ16, HZ17, HZ26 and HZ27. Fair Isle is the only piece of land
within the very rare HZ 100 km Ordnance Survey Grid Square.
GS4WAB will be established at the South Lighthouse on the island,
while GS7WAB will be used for portable activations on other parts
of the island, including the North Lighthouse. QSL via G4IAR,
by the Bureau, or direct. If direct (outside the UK), please
enclose SAE and 2 USDs. UK stations use a SAE and 2x first class
stamps please. If no or insufficient return postage is sent,
cards will be acknowledged, but via the Bureau. More details are

NA-122. (Op Cancelled) Adriano, IK2GNW, who was expected to be active
as HI9/IK2GNW from Levantado Island in the Dominican Republic
for 2 months starting January 27th, has cancelled his operation.
OC-138/
OC-171. Craig, VK4LDX, will be on an IOTA DXpedition again starting
in April. His next trip will be to Horn Island (OC-138) between
April 22–27th. This will be followed by another trip to Magnetic
Island (OC-171) [he was there in December] between on April
29th and May 2nd. Craig states that he has retired his old
Butternut HF9V vertical and will now use a Spiderbeam for
20/15/10 meters mounted on a 10m aluminium pole using a tripod.

SA-024. Members of the São Paulo Association of Radioamadores (APRE)
along with some guest operators will be active as PR2R from
Ilha Comprida (Comprida Island; DIB SP03), located in the
southern state of Sao Paulo, between January 28-30th. Activity
will be on 80/40/20/15/10/6/2 meters. Operators mentioned are:
Paulo/PY2ZZ, Euclides/PY2EV, Claudio/PY3NZ, Cristiano/PY3UK,
Ronan/PY2RAR, Marcelo/PY2OX, Filipe/PU2TEA and Rafael/PU2RFS.

of this island corresponds to a project of more complex
dimensions that consist of placing on the air all blockhouses,
islands and lighthouses of the State of São Paulo. More detailed

SA-097. As this was being written, operators Cezar/VE3LYC and Johan/
PA3EXX are now active as CE9/VE3LYC and CE9/PA3EXX from
Ganzolo Island, in the Diego Ramirez Islands chain. Activity
will be on 40/30/20/17/15 meters using CW and SSB. The length
of their stay is unknown at this time, but activity could last

IT9, ITLAY. Saulius, LY5W, will be active as IT9/LY5W from Sicily Island
(EU-025, IIA SC-001, MIA MI-107, WLOTA 1362) during the CQ 160-Meter CW
Contest (January 28-30th) as a Single-Op or Multi-Op entry. QSL via LY5W,

JX, JAN MAYEN (Update/Changes). The Jan Mayen DXpedition set between
July 6-14th, 2011, (see OPDX.949) and led by Stan, SQ8X, has announced
their group callsign will be JX7VPA. Currently, the team consists of:
Stan/SQ8X (team leader), Pete/SQ9DIE, Vicky/SV2KBS, Decan/EI6FR, Leszek/
NI1L, Tomek/SQ9C, Bernie/HB9ASZ, Pekka/OH2TA and Deon/K6WH Deon. The
group plans to be on the air for 8 days with 2-3 stations. Stan also
states, "Due to polar summer season at Jan Mayen Island with broad day-
light 24/7 the team will not operate on 160-80 meters – those bands will
be totally dead at that time. The DXpedition will focus on 30-6 meters,
and our main modes will be CW and RTTY/PSK, with some SSB if conditions
will be good enough to operate as much as we wish to. The team will also
check conditions on the 40m band, but the band may also be not usable at
that time of the year. The team will have a professional TV crew on board
that will prepare a broadcast documentary about the project and the

KH2, GUAM. Operators Nobu/JR3STX and Take/JS6RRR will be active as
W3STX/KH2 and KH2/JS6RRR, respectively, from Guam (OC-026) between
2200z, February 10th and 0300z, February 15th. Activity will be on
160-6 meters using CW, SSB, FM, RTTY and PSK31. QSL W3STX/KH2 via

NCDXF PRESS RELEASE. Glenn Johnson, W0GJ, Vice President of NCDXF, sent
out the following press release on January 14th: "ARRL & NCDXF Scholar-
ships – Deadline February 1, 2011: This year the Northern California DX
Foundation is proud to be sponsoring THREE scholarships for deserving

The ARRL Foundation administers the granting of over 60 scholarships
each year, three of which are sponsored from the W6EEN Memorial NCDXF
Scholarship Fund.
The deadline is fast approaching. All materials -- including trans-
cripts -- are due February 1. Beginning this year, applicants must submit
all material electronically. No paper forms will be accepted.
Each applicant must submit a transcript from their high school or
college to complete their application. Applications must be submitted

If you have college bound children, grand children or know of a deserving
young ham, get them to apply now. There are just two weeks before the

P4, ARUBA. Dee, W1HEO, will be active as P4/W1HEO from the P49V contest
station on Aruba (SA-036) between April 3-16th. Activity will be on 160-10
meters, using CW and SSB, with an emphasis on the higher HF and 30/17/12
meter bands. Although this is a semi-holiday outing, major effort will be
devoted to maximizing on-air operating time. Operations on the IOTA
frequencies will include: CW - 14040, 18098, 21040 and 28040 kHz; SSB -
14260, 18128, 21260 and 28460 kHz. A special color postcard/QSL will be
available. QSL direct only to the W1HEO, by the QRZ.com address or by the
Bureau.
PACIFIC TRIP (In Preparation For Conway Reef). Hrane, YT1AD, will be
heading to the South Pacific to make do some logistical preparations
(boat and some equipment) for the 3D2C Conway Reef DXpedition later this
year during September and October. According to the updated news on the
3D2C Web page <http://www.yt1ad.info/3d2c/news.html>, Hrane plans to visit
Samoa (5W) between January 18-22nd, and be active as 5W8A. He will also
visit American Samoa (KH8), between January 22-25th, and be active as
KH8/N9YU. His travels will end at Fiji (3D2) between January 26-29th,

POSSIBLE NEW ENTITY (Southern Sudan referendum)? BBC is reporting that
"early results from Southern Sudan's referendum indicate the region has
voted overwhelmingly to split from the north and form a new country.
Full results of the poll are not due until next month, but the region

ARRL OUTGOING QSL SERVICE (New Rates). The ARRL announced that "Effective
January 17, 2011, a new pricing structure will go into effect for the
ARRL Outgoing QSL Service. With the new rate structure, amateurs will
no longer need to count outgoing cards and then guess as to what to pay
based upon a half-pound rate; a simple weighing of the cards is all that
is necessary to determine what amount to send to the Bureau. This new
structure also accommodates a small rate increase in response to recent
postage, shipping and handling costs.
The last rate revision for the Outgoing QSL Service was in January
2007. Even though international shipping costs have remained flat over
the last 4 years, domestic shipping costs have risen more than 16 percent
since 2007, while material and handling costs continue to climb 1 to 2
percent each year.
The new rate will be:
* 2 USDs for 10 or fewer cards in one envelope.
* 3 USDs for 11-20 cards in one envelope, or
* 75 cents per ounce, for packages with 21 or more cards. For example,
a package containing 1.5 pounds -- 24 ounces, or about 225 cards
-- of cards will cost $18.

LOTW NOW SUPPORTS VUCC. It was announced this past week that the "ARRL's
Logbook of the World (LoTW) -- an online system for amateurs to confirm
two-way contacts that can be used for various ARRL awards -- has been
upgraded to support awards based on Maidenhead grid squares, such as VUCC
and the Fred Fish Memorial Award.
To take advantage of the new features, you need to log in to your LoTW
account. (Don't have an LoTW account? It's easy to sign up. Go to:
http://www.arrl.org/instructions
VUCC is an open-ended award in that hams can work on throughout their
lifetime, just like DXCC. But, like the Worked All States (WAS) award,
the VUCC rules require all the contacts to be made from a defined area.
For VHF and UHF QSOs on 1296 MHz and below, this distance must be within
200 km on 1296 MHz and below. For SHF awards, contacts must be made from
a single location, defined as within a 300 meter diameter circle. As
such, the VUCC support in LoTW allows you to make the rule -- or rules --
necessary to find the QSLs in LoTW that satisfy the VUCC rules." For the

S79K QSL STATUS. Dave, G3NKC, reports: "Following postal delays getting
QSLs from the printer; I rapidly turned around all of the QSLs that had
arrived to me (around 400). I am still getting a steady stream of requests,
that I should turn around pretty fast. However, I am still seeing a large
number of items arriving that were posted well before Christmas. The UK
postal service (and in particular, my local sorting office!) is somewhat
in disarray at present, and I have been told that they have a significant
backlog to deal with. If anyone has applied for a card, but not received
one, please QRX; it will come eventually. You can E-mail me to enquire if
you are concerned! I will also accept PayPal to cover return postage
which will cut down on half of the journey, but please send me an E-mail
to confirm that you are doing this, and ensure that I receive sufficient

SILENT KEY. It was reported that Ken Stenback, W8KS (ex-AI8S), became a
Silent Key (SK) on January 1st, at the age of 63. He was an avid DXer with
343 confirmed on the ARRL DXCC standings. Ken was the driving force behind
the Ashtabula County Amateur Radio Club's many activities and served many
terms as its President. OPDX and its readers would like to send out our
deepest sympathy to the family and friends of W8KS.
SV/A, MOUNT ATHOS. Monk Apollo, SV2ASP/A, was heard active this past
weekend on 40 and 17 meters SSB. QSL direct to his home callsign.
T31, CENTRAL KIRIBATI (Update). An international team will activate T31A
from Kanton Island (OC-043) between April 17-28th. The transportation has
been arranged, all licenses are assigned and the permit is in its final
stages. They plan to have 6 stations on the air, operating on 160-10
meters. The following operators have been mentioned: Carlos/EA1IR,
Jim/K6ZH, Dave/N1EMC, Arnie/N6HC, Bud/N7CW, John/N7CQQ, Mike/N9NS,
Paul/UX2HO, Jay/W2IJ, Charlie/W6KK, Phil/W9IXX and Hrane/YT1AD. The
pilot stations will be Eduardo/EA3NY and San/K5YY. Suggested frequencies
are:
CW - 1826, 3504, 7004, 10104, 14024, 18074, 21024, 24894 and 28024 kHz
SSB - 1843, 3798, 7084, 14195, 18145, 21295, 24945 and 28495 kHz
RTTY - 3582, 7043, 10140, 14080, 18100, 21080, 24920 and 28080 kHz
6m - 50099/CW and 50120/SSB
IOTA Frequencies to be used are:

"Two team members will arrive in Apia on April 6, 2011, to inspect the
equipment shipped from California and operate from 5W as time allows.
The team will leave Apia on April 13, 2011, and sail approximately 4
days. Upon arrival at Kanton, we'll setup 2 sites and begin operation.
We plan 11-12 days of operation. We'll depart Kanton and arrive back in

T7, SAN MARINO. Ivo, 9A3A/E73A, will activate the Amateurs Radio Republic
of San Marino (A.R.R.S.M.) club station T70A during the CQ 160-Meter CW
Contest (January 28-30th) as a Single-Op/High-Power entry. QSL via T70A.
TF, ICELAND. Richard, K5NA, will activate the TF4M club station in
Otradalur, using the callsign TF4X during the CQ 160-Meter CW Contest
(January 28-30th) as a Single-Op/High-Power entry. QSL via G3SWH.
TJ, CAMEROON (Update). An international team composed of members of the
Provins ARC (F6KOP) will be active as TJ3C from Kribi between February
10-20th (See OPDX.992). It was reported this past week that the TJ3C Web
page is now active and online at: http://www.tj3c.fr
TO5, MARTINIQUE (NA-107). Al, F5VHJ, will once again be active as TO5A,
but this time during the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 26-27th) as a Single-
Op/All-Band/High-Power entry. QSL via F5VHJ, direct or by the Bureau. Logs
will be uploaded to LoTW.
TT8, CHAD. Baldur, DJ6SI, will once again return to Chad and operate as
TT8DX between February 14–24th. Activity will be mainly CW. QSL via his
home callsign.
V3, BELIZE. Torsten, DG7RO, will be active as V31TF from Belize between
February 9th and March 1st. Activity will be holiday style on 160-10
meters using mainly SSB and RTTY, and possibly CW. He will use a FT-857
w/100 watts into a dipole and longwire antenna. Also, look for him to be
active in the CQ WPX RTTY Contest (February 12-13th), ARRL DX CW Contest
(February 19-20th) and CQWW 160M SSB Contest (February 25-27th), possibly
as V31GW.
V5, NAMIBIA. Members of the Lufthansa Amateur Radio Club (LARC) will be
active as V55DLH from Omaruru between February 5–12th. Operators mentioned
are: Georg/DD8ZX, Bernd/DF1FF, Juergen/DH0RAK, Juergen/DH6ICE, Frank/DJ3FK,
Rudi/DK7PE and Bernhard/DK7TF. Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW,

VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND (Update/Reminder). A group of JA operators on a
DX holiday to Christmas Island (OC-002) is now active until January 20th.
The updated operators list include the following (with their own VK9X
callsign) are: Tatsuo/JA3ARJ (JA3ARJ/VK9), Takeo/JA3BZO (VK9XA), Hiroko/
JH3PBL (VK9XL), Shimatake/JI3DNN (VK9XN), Masumi/JA3AVO (VK9XO), Nakasako/
JA3UJR (VK9XJR), Kunio/JA1CJA (VK9XXY) and Nishimura/JA3HJI (VK9XJ).
Activity will be on 160-6 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes.

VP8O, SOUTH ORKNEY ISLANDS. Members of the Microlight Penguins have begun
to head south to Argentina. This is where the team will start their trip
on board the "RV Braveheart" to head to South Orkney Islands (AN-008) and
be active as VP8ORK between January 27th and February 8th. They expect to
be on the air with 7 stations on all HF bands 160-10 meters using SSB, CW
and RTTY. If you want a QSL card, there are three ways available to receive
one: OQRS direct (on the VP8O Web page), OQRS Bureau (on the VP8O Web page)
and direct by mail via VE3XN [w/SASE/Green Stamps/IRC(s)]. For more details

ZS8, MARION ISLAND (Update). Pierre, ZS1HF/ZS8M, reports on QRZ.com and
the ZS8M Web page <http://www.iz8epy.it/html/zs8m.html> (edited): "The
polar supply ship arrives on March 15th, 2011. This means the ZS8M SSB
operation will most likely end on this date, BUT there is a possibility
that PSK operations will continue until May 11th, 2011. If I am able to
operate after this date, it will be a bonus. The ZS8M DXpedition will
definitely end on May 5th, 2011. On this date our team departs Marion
Island for Cape Town." Pierre suggests to keep monitoring the above Web
sites for updates.
