5W, SAMOA. Ted/K8AQM and David/K8AA will be active as 5W0TR and 5W0AA,
respectively, July 2-12th. Activity will be 40-10 meters mainly CW,
Digital and some SSB. QSL both callsigns via K8AA.
6O, SOMALILAND. Baldur, DJ6SI, who has been active as 6O0X from here, will
be active for a few more days (probably the end of the week). Most of his
activity has been mainly on 20/17/15 meters CW, however, he has been on
other bands. Somaliland, which has declared itself independent from Somalia
(T5) in 1991, does not qualify for anything for DXCC. The license was
issued by Somaliland government, not Somali government.
CONTEST DATE CHANGED. Jim, K8MR, reports that the 2002 Ohio QSO Party
(OQP) date, as published in the Contest Calendar in the May/June NCJ,
has been changed to Saturday, August 24th. This is to avoid the Labor
Day weekend. The OQP runs from 1600z Saturday to 0400z Sunday, August
25th.
DAYTON EVENTS..........
According to Steve Bolia, N8BJQ, the program for the DX Dinner will
be a presentation on the recent VP6DI operation.
The Northern Ohio DX Association (along with WVNO Radio) will once again
sponsor a Hospitality Suite at this year's Dayton Hamvention. It will
be in Suite 1011 on the 10th Club Floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (old
Stouffers) on Friday and Saturday evenings. All DXers/Contesters are
welcome. Munchies and refreshments will be avaialble. Come and meet
the members and friends of NODXA.
DXCC NEWS................
Bill Moore, NC1L, DXCC Manager, reports that QSLs for OJ0U, Market Reef,
are being accepted for DXCC.
QSLs for D6\WB4MBU still are not approved for DXCC because WB4MBU has
not provided documentation for DXCC credit.
FP, ST. PIERRE AND MIQUELO ISLANDS. Jean Christophe, FP5AC, President of
the Saint-Pierre & Miquelon Islands ARC, informs that their next DXpedition
will take place on June 21-23rd. They will go to the Ile aux Chevaux
(Horses Island - IOTA NA-032, DIFO FP009). The Ile aux Chevaux is a little
90m diameter island located in the Barachois off Miquelon. The crew
consists of four "JEANS", Jean-Christophe/FP5AC, Jean-Pierre/FP5CJ,
Jean/FP5BU, Jean-Marc/FP5BZ and the cook, SWL Claude. They will go first
to Miquelon village by Land Rover, then they will use two little boats to
go and land on the Ile aux Chevaux. Jean-Christophe, FP5AC, states a lot
of thanks go out to Monsieur Joseph LUCAS, the owner of the island who
gave them the kind permission for landing and staying there. The ARC's
callsign, FP5KE, will be used on all bands from 160 to 10 meters and they
also plan to be active on 50 Mhz. A special QSL card will be issued,
so listen carefully to the operator's instructions to get one.
GOLDEN JUBILEE. The complete press release by Don, G3XTT, GB50 Publicity
Officer, will be sent to all OPDX InterNet Subscribers as an additional
bulletin. GB50 activity will take place from a marquee on the North
Terrace of Windsor Castle from 0900z on May 29th until 2100z on June 9th,
with operation daily from 0700-2200z on all bands 80 through 6 meters.

IOTA NEWS.............
AS-099. Members of the radio club Stip (Z37M/Z30M), Macedonia, and
the members of the radio club from Istanbul, Turkey, TA1KA,
will be active from the Island of Bozcaada between May 20-28th.
Acitivities will be on all bands (160-10 meters) including
6m, 2m and 70cm, CW, SSB, RTTY, PSK and SSTV. There will also
be participation in the CQWW WPX Contest. Members of the
radio club Stip are: Z31MM/Momo, Z31GX/Chris, Z31RM/Todor,
Z32PT/Tone, Z33F/Zoki, Z36W/Venco and YU7AV/Voja from
Yugoslavia as a honorary member of the club. Members of the
TA1KA radio club are: TA1E/Aziz and TA2DS/Selim. Callsigns
will be TA0/homecall, and they will also use the special
callsign YM0KA. QSLs for YM0KA are via TA1KA and for the
others via home callsigns. More information about the expedition

AS-118. A group from the Kuwait Amateur Radio Society will operate
from Failaka Island with the callsign 9K2F. If everything goes
as planned, they should be active May 22-31sst. QSL via 9K2RA;
bureau is OK.
EU-125. A group of German Scouts will be active from a camp site in
Kongsmark on the Danish northsea island Roemoe (Locator JO45GC).
The Scout Club station, OZ1RDP, will be on the air from May
18-21st. Their activity will be on 80-2 meters CW/SSB. Operators
will be DL9BCP, DL4KBS, DM1CG, DL9BQ, DG2BCI and DG2BCJ.
NA-091. Frank, VE7DP, informs OPDX that the planned operation from
NA-091 on May 11-12th was postponed until May 18-19th. The
operation was going to take place from Rebecca Spit Provincial
Park on Quadra Island. Due to unusually cold weather, the park
remains closed until May 15th. No other suitable operating
location could be found on short notice.
NA-148. Tony/WF1N and Lou/W1DIG will be on Thacher Island July 26-28th.
Operations will start around 1500z Friday and end about 1800z
Sunday. Their activity before and during the IOTA Contest will
be with a tribander, dipoles and an amp for 40/80. Operations
will take place on/near the usual IOTA frequencies. QSL to
their home calls direct (sae and postage, pse) or Bureau.

will accept requests for Bureau Cards via E-mail. E-mail
requests do not require a card to them via the Bureau. Thacher

K1B QRT. The K1B DXpedition to Baker Island finished its operation on
May 7th, at 1800z. Last official report says about 86000 QSOs were made.
Logs are still not completely uploaded on the K1B Web site.
LIGHTHOUSE NEWS AND ACTIVITY...............
Jim Weidner, K2JXW, Founder and President of the Amateur Radio Lighthouse
Society, reports in a press release: "The Amateur Radio Lighthouse
Society (ARLHS), as part of National Lighthouse Week, is sponsoring its
annual August lighthouse event, August 3rd and 4th, 2002. Formerly known
as the National Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend, or NLLW, the event's name
has been changed to better reflect the participating lights. With a
growing membership in our society from Canada and South America, the
event will now be known as the PanAmerican Lighthouse-Lightship Weekend
(PAL-LW). Details on this increasingly popular ARLHS operating event,
as well as guidelines for operating in the ILLW (International LL
Weekend), August 17th-18th, will follow soon from Dave, NF0J, the ARLHS
Contest Chairman."
Good news for Lighthouses hunters. A lighthouse was spotted in the
picture on the K1B Web page, and it will be added to the list of ARLHS
Lighthouses. Here is the quote from Ted, W8TTS: "In doing some research,
I've noted that there was a lighthouse on Baker Island. And, as the
Lighthouse List Keeper for the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society (ARLHS),
I was wondering, if the QSL cards haven't been printed yet, if the ARLHS
number could be included. It is: ARLHS BAK-001 Baker Island Lighthouse"
During the month of May, look for W1KSI/p to be active from the following
Hudson River, NY, lighthouses: Esopus Meadows (USA 276), Roundout
Creek II (USA 702) and Tarrytown (USA 836). QSL via W1KSI, CBA.
NET ACTIVITY. Donald, KB6QLC, suggests to check out the Ten-Ten nets on
28800 kHz, as well as 28380 kHz which is active everyday (except Sunday)
at 1800z.
OC, PERU. To commemorate/celebrate the foundation of the International
Telecomunication Union on May 17th (World Telecommunications Day), all
OA stations may use the special prefix "OC" between May 13-19th, on all
authorized bands and modes. Look for station OC4O. The official station
of the Radio Club Peruano will be on the air during that week, on all
bands, SSB and also CW. Also, the Radio Club Peruano, under the auspices
of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, Housing and Construction
(MTCVC) of Peru, has created a "World Telecommunicacions Day - International

OJ0, MARKET REEF. Look for Seppo, OH1VR, to be active as OJ0VR from
June 7-11th and July 8-11th. Activity will be on 160-6m CW/SSB. He will
use a A4S and a 5 element on 6m. QSL via OH1VR CBA.
OJ0, MARKET REEF. The group of SM5AJV, SM0GNS, SM5HJZ and SM0HPL will be
active from Market Reef (EU-053) from June 13-16th. They will travel by
boat, and the unpredictable sea surrounding Market Reef may cause landing
problems. Any changes in plans will be announced on the Web page:

Operation plans are CW and SSB on 160-6 meters. They will try to be on
the air with at least two station 24 hours a day. Other modes might be
possible (RTTY, PSK31 etc.). QSL Manager is SM5HJZ. QSL via the bureau
is prefered. If possible use the QSL-request form on the home page in
order to speed up the QSL-handling. Your QSL-card is not necessary. For
direct cards, send to: Jonas Ytterman, Lilla Breden, SE-740 10 Almunge,
SWEDEN (1 USD or 1 IRC and self-addressed envelope is required).
OY, FAROE ISLANDS. Tom/DL2RTK and Ric/DL2VFR will be active as OY/homecall,
May 20-22th, from Streymoy Island (EU-018). This will also count for Strymoy
Island Lighthouse (ARLHS FAR-034). QSL via home calls.
P4, ARUBA. Mike/N3MT and Dick/W3RM will be active from Aruba, May 29th
through June 19th, as P40MT and P40RM. Operation will be on 160 through
6 meters, mainly CW, some SSB. QSL via their U.S. calls, CBA.
P5, NORTH KOREA. Ed, P5/4L4FN, is back in Pyongyang after a little holiday
in differnet parts of Asia. He is now using an Ameritron AL80A amplifier
that was donated to him by Martti Laine, OH2BH, Bernie McClenny, W3UR and
Al Baker, W5IZ, which he picked up on his stop over in Beijing.
Also, this past week was a "BIG JOY" for many DXers who received their
P5 QSL in the mail. (ed. It was worth the wait! TNX you Bruce)
QSL INFO AND NEWS............
"YEA, what is the QSL status of S9LA?", asks one of readers. Well,
we do not know. Does anyone out there know or could anyone provide
an update for our OPDX readers?
Last week we sent out a request about the QSL status of the KC4USV
and KC4AAA QSL. Several readers have informed OPDX that they have
received their QSLs about month ago (some say a week turn around).
Russ, W7LWI, informed OPDX that he E-mailed the QSL Manager (Larry,
K1IED) and asked if all cards would be sent out before the new postage
rates went into effect (June). He replied that he felt all would be
sent before that time. Also, Harry, W6DXO, has been in touch with
K1IED. He was told by Larry that he has just finished a large batch
for KC4AAA QSLs and should be caught up in a couple of weeks. Also,
the KC4USV logs just came in, and he believes most of the backlog
should be done by the end of the month.
Bob, WB2YQH, informs OPDX why 5X1GS QSLs have not been available for
the past 3 months. Here is the story on the missing in action 5X1GS:
Graham has spent most of his time since Christmas up on the border
with Sudan rather than Kampala. He got home to find his E-mail
connection was not working as someone had stolen the entire length
of telephone line on his street! He says he should be spending most
of his time in Kampala now and will be active on 17 meters over the
weekends. Bob states that he has the log file for the current period
up through April. The UK department that Graham works for set up a
satellite link to their server in Scotland just to get it back up.
The local telecom boys are getting/provding a new telephone line.
Bob states everything should be back to the 24 hour turnaround on
QSLs. Please QSL with a SASE or SAE/IRC via WB2YQH.
D68C QSLING STATUS. Phil, G3SWH, has now confirmed over 56,000 QSOs
and is completely up-to-date with all incoming direct and E-mail
requests. New requests continue to be received with each mail delivery!
Under normal circumstances, Phil is able to respond to incoming requests
within about 48 hours. Attention is now turning to bureau cards, and
Phil has already received several large boxes of cards via the bureau
system. Replying to these will take some time, so do be patient. As a
reminder, the D68C cards are four sided, printed in full color and
weigh about 10 grams. Each card carries the information for 3 QSOs,
so if you made lots of QSOs, a direct request should be accompanied by
adequate reply paid postage and a strong SAE. In any case, outside
Europe, one IRC covers just 10 grams of weight, and as even one card
and envelope are likely to exceed this weight, one IRC is generally not
enough for postage for non-European stations. If insufficient postage
is received, then cards may be returned via surface mail or via the
bureau, although they are able from time to time to get cards mailed
in the U.S., which helps to overcome weight limits for US applicants.
Phil says that there is some evidence that a small number of incoming
and outgoing cards have been lost by the postal authorities. If you
mailed your card on or after 1st March 2002 and have not yet received
a reply, he suggests that you apply again. For the latest information

E4/OE1GZA QSL STATUS. Guenter, OE1GZA, informs OPDX that the recent
adverse Middle East situation has caused havoc for direct QSLing via
P.O.Box 1133, Ramallah. All direct QSLs, which arrived there between
December 2001 and April 2002, have just now been retrieved and have
been replied to. So anyone who sent a card to there during this period
who has not received a response by early June 2002, must unfortunately
consider his inbound mail lost. Please resend direct to OE1GZA in
Austria, address in QRZ.com - which incidently is the new QSL-info
(do not use the above P.O.Box any longer!!). The E4/OE1GZA log is

T30, WESTERN KIRIBATI. Eric, T30ES (N1JSY), on the island of Butaritari
in Western Kiribati, will be off the air the until approximately May 16th
to attend Peace Corps meetings in Tarawa. His exact return date is
dependent upon local transportation. For the latest information and his

TN, CONGO (CONGO DXPEDITION 2002 READY TO START!!). Josep, EA3BT, informs
OPDX that he and Nuria, EA3WL, are ready to start their DXpedition. They
will be leaving for Brazzaville, May 16th, and hope to be on air as soon
as they get everything setup. Their callsigns will be TN3B and TN3W (to
be issued upon arrival). They are going to put 2 simultaneous stations
on air. The bands will be from 80-6 meters, SSB, RTTY and some CW. You

TY, Benin. After their trip in North Benin in 2001, operators F5MOO/TY7Z,
F5CWU/TY9F, F5AOV/TY4DX and F1PJB/TY6FB are planning another DXpedition
to the South part of Benin (Grand-Popo, near the Togo boarder) which will
take place July 15th through August 14th. More details to follow later.
UE9, ASIATIC RUSSIA. Look for special event callsigns to be used by a
Siberian radio amateurs correspondence club called "Radio-Prim" (RPC).
They will be activating the special events callsigns UE9OWQ and UE9ORQ
now through 0000z May 20th, to commemorate the 9th Anniversary of the
formation of the RPC on 15th on May, 1993. They expect to have 65 members
of the RPC active on the bands. A special award is available called,
"Radio-Prim.Novosibirsk" ("R-P.N"), during this time of activity. For

XE1CI UPDATE. Lenny, K5OVC, reports that Nellie is seeing a therapist
daily at her house. The therapist has Nellie walking. She took 8 steps.
The therapist has started Nellie on her recovery program. As soon as she
is able, she wants to get on the radio and her computer; the doctor has
OKed it. Nellie wants to thank all her amateur radio friends for their
love and support, and thoughts and prayers.
YA, AFGHANISTAN. YA5T should be active again this week both by Peter/ON6TT
and Mark/ON4WW. Mark will be there for the next two months, Peter will
only be there for a few days and Robert, S53R, will be there within a fews
weeks. He is currently in Palestine.

Amateur Radio for the Golden Jubilee
News Release No. 2, May 2002
Detailed plans for the very special amateur radio event (see the previous
news release) at Windsor Castle, England in late May and early June are
proceeding at pace.
GB50 will take place from a marquee on the North Terrace of Windsor Castle
from 0900z on 29th May until 2100z on 9th June, with operation daily from
0700-2200z on all bands 80 through 6 metres. The event will feature a
top-of-the-range amateur radio station, and location provides a great
take-off to all major regions of the world.
GB50 will feature a "Meet and Greet" area which will promote amateur radio
to Castle visitors, and will feature information boards tracking the history
of amateur radio from Marconi to the present day. Information will be
available on the new Foundation licence, including where to access courses
and sit the examination. Cray Valley Radio Society is now solely responsible
for the GB50 amateur radio station, while Burnham Beeches Radio Club and the
Radio Society of Great Britain are handling arrangements for the "Meet and
Greet" area.
We are delighted to announce that all the transmitting equipment to be used
at GB50 will be supplied by Icom UK. All five operating positions will
feature either Icom IC7400 or Icom IC-756ProII transceivers.
There will be two operating awards available for working GB50. To obtain
the first, you need just one QSO with GB50 between 0001z on 1st June and
2359z on 4th June. A second award is available for making a number of QSOs
with the station during the period of operation (29th May - 9th June). Full
details appear below and are also available on the GB50 Website or from the
Awards Manager, Clare Treacher RS102891, at [email protected] We
understand the RSGB will also be issuing an award which combines working
GB50 with working UK stations using the special Jubilee GQ prefix. Check
their Website (www.rsgb.org) for details.
It will be possible to visit GB50 during normal opening hours at Windsor
Castle (see http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/page576.asp for information on
visiting the Castle). Visitors will need to pay the standard entrance fee to
the Castle, which also entitles them to visit the State Apartments and other
public areas.
Bob Treacher BRS32525 ([email protected]) will be handling all SWL
reports for GB50. He is no stranger to QSL Manager duties having handled
cards for the 9M0C and D68C DXpeditions.

GB50 OPERATING AWARDS
There are two awards associated with the GB50 special event station.
They are the GB50 Golden Jubilee Award and the GB50 Jubilee Points Award.
The GB50 Golden Jubilee Award
This award is available to any licensed amateur who works GB50 over the
Queens Golden Jubilee Weekend (00.00z 1st June - 23.59z 4th June 2002).
Only one QSO with GB50 on any band/mode is necessary.
This award costs �3, $5, 8 IRC or 5 Euros
GB50 Jubilee Points Award
This award is available to any licensed amateur who works GB50 between 29th
May 2002 - 9th June 2002.
A total of 50 points are required to claim this award.
- Each QSO with GB50 over the Jubilee Weekend (00.00z 1st June - 2359z 4th
June 2002) will be worth 20 points
- Each QSO with GB50 before and after the Jubilee Weekend will be worth 10
points
Only one QSO per band/mode will count for points. No cross band, cross mode
or APRS contacts will count.
This award costs �3, $5, 8 IRC or 5 Euros
Both awards are available to Short Wave Listeners
Both awards will be full colour certificates.
