FEW NOTES FROM EDITOR, TEDD, KB8NW: I can not guararantee that there will
be a bulletin over the next two weeks due to a very hectic schedule. IF
(and I do stress the word "IF") there is a bulletin for May 13th it will
probably be some genreal announcements (but small in size). This is due
to a few family events (I will be traveling to Toledo to see my son graduate
from the University of Toledo early Saturday. Also, my dad and sister will
be in town for a special family gathering/celebration. It is also Mother's
Day.) Because I will be attending the Dayton HamVention, there will not
be a bulletin for May 20th (unless there is a major announcement). Please,

3V, TUNISIA. Terry/F5MSE and Steve/F5NZY (FOC) will be active from Djerba
as 3V8SM, May 8-15th. Activity will be on all HF bands on CW and SSB. QSL
via F5MSE.
6Y, JAMAICA. OPDX was informed that "Team Vertical" is heading back to
Jamaica for the WPX CW Contest. The team will arrive in Jamaica May 18th,
and depart May 28th. They will be active on all bands, 160-6 meters. The
callsign 6Y2A will be used during the contest on May 25-26th. The group
will enter the Multi/Multi category, and will run six stations, each
running a KW during the contest. Outside the contest, the team will operate
as "homecall/6Y5". The list of operators are: N6BT, KE7X, WA6O, N6XG,
W0YK, N6XI, and K2KW. Four of the transceivers will be Elecraft K2/100
rigs. As always, they will be using Force 12 vertical antennas on all
bands from 160-6 meters. On 6 meters, they will be very active running a
KW and will be transmitting on 50.102 MHz, QSX outside the DX window as
directed. QSL 6Y2A and K2KW via WA4WTG. QSL others as directed.
7O, YEMEN. Pekka, OH2YY, has informed OPDX that he will be on a business
trip in Sanaa, Yemen, from the evening of May 7th until late night on
May 11th. He has applied for permission to operate amateur radio during his
visit, and he has received a written confirmation dated on April 23rd, to
import his radio equipment and to operate them during his visit. So far,
Pekka has not been assigned a 7O-callsign, and unless otherwise agreed
after his arrival, he will be using the callsign 7O/OH2YY. Pekka will
carry a FT840 transceiver and a FinnFet 1001 amplifier. He will also have
a Cuscraft R5 vertical with him, and once in Sanaa, he will try to organize
(setup) either a dipole or a long wire for 40 and 80 meters. Pekka has
suggested the following frequencies: 3790, 7045, 14195, 18135, 21295,
24950, 28495 kHz. If the propagation allows, he will try to maximize the
number of QSOs by staying on the higher frequencies. He will operate SSB
only. His QTH in Sanaa will be a bit outside of the city in a residential
district. It's a higher altitude location having a very nice and clear
view to the north over the valley of the city of Sanaa. The QTH should
be good for QSOs to North America, Caribbean, Europe and most of Asia,
including Japan. On Tuesday, May 7th, Pekka will arrive in Sanaa so late
that most likely he will have to wait until the next morning to get the
antennas installed. He will have business meetings on Wednesday and
Saturday, and Pekka is not aware of his detailed schedule yet. On Thursday
and Friday he should be able to operate most of the day. Anyway, he will
use all the available time for DXing. The QSL address is his home address:

7O, YEMEN. A couple of sources are reporting that Chris Lorek, G4HCL,
was recently in Sanaa, Yemen, and while there he made a handful of
contacts as 7O/G4HCL "under the direct supervision of the Yemeni
Communications Ministry". Chris is currently back in the UK, but will
be back in Yemen on Saturday, May 11th, for a three week stay. He is
expected to be operating on the amateur bands by himself from Sanaa
and possibly other locations in the country. However, his operating
time will be limited to his spare time due to his work schedule. This
is not a DXpedition. He will be using a FT-990 with 100 watts into
a vertical or dipole antennas. QSL information to be announced.
ARMED FORCES DAY. Amateurs are urged to take part in the upcoming 52nd
Armed Forces Day event, May 11-12th. There will be an exchange of contacts
with the Army, Air Force, Navy-Marine Corps and Coast Guard radio stations.
This year's traditional Armed Forces Day actually falls on May 18th, but
the traditional cross-band communications test was rescheduled to avoid
a conflict with the Dayton Hamvention. Cross-band activity is expected
to be on amateur frequencies in the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands with
transmissions on selected MARS frequencies. For more details, please check

CY9, ST. PAUL ISLAND. Operators Duane/WV2B, William/VE1AAO, James/VE9DH,
Ed/W0SD, Arliss/W7XU, Holly/N0QJM and Edith/W0OE are expected to be on the
air from here late June 29th through July 8th. The operation will feature
two full time stations and an attempt is being made to add a third, part
time HF station to be used during peak propagation times, especially to the
Pacific area where CY9 is needed by many. The group plans on operating on
the west side of the island to have a clear shot to Asia, South America,
North America and most of Europe. The landing is much more difficult on
this side because of the prevailing winds which always seem to blow on St.
Paul with high seas; therefore, the start up date is subject to landing
conditions. As far as it is known, no previous operations have been from
this side of the island. This operation will feature a full time, dedicated
six meter station operated by W7XU, N0QJM, W0SD and W0OE. The six meter
station WILL ONLY transmit on 50.157 MHz listening up when there is
propagation. A beam and ACOM 1000 amplifier will be used with operation
on SSB and CW. Liaison will be available on 28.886 MHz and E-mail updates
via WINLINK 2000 will be provided to the appropriate Six Meter Internet
sites. The Grid Square will be FN97. A special effort will be made to work
Europe on double hop sporadic E in addition to North America and Caribbean
areas! A second station will be set up for HF. The operation plans to use
a 5 band Hex beam for 20-10 meters and a vertical on 30 and 40 meters. Given
the time of the year, no operation is planned for 80 and 160 meters. An
ACOM 1000 amplifier will be used. There will be activity on RTTY, SSB and
CW. Operators will be WV2B, VE1AAO, VE9DH, W0SD, W7XU, N0QJM and W0OE.
Planned frequencies are as follows:
RTTY - 7080, 10115, 14080, 18080, 21080, 24908 and 28080 kHz
CW - 7005, 10105, 14020, 18100, 21020, 24900 and 28020 khz
SSB - 14195, 18145, 21295, 24945 and 28495 (alternate 14145) kHz
All QSLs via W7XU.
DAYTON EVENT. The Northern Ohio DX Association (along with WVNO Radio) will
once again sponsor a Hospitality Suite at this year's Dayton Hamvention. It
will be in Suite 1011 on the 10th Club Floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel
(old Stouffers) on Friday and Saturday evenings. All DXers/Contesters are
welcome. Munchies and refreshments will be avaialble. Come and meet the
members and friends of NODXA.
DXCC NEWS................
Bill Moore, NC1L, DXCC Manager, reports that "ZK1QMA for North Cook
Island has been on hold awaiting supporting documentation. This has
been received, and upon review, it is now being accepted for DXCC credit.
Anyone who had this rejected during a recent submission can contact
DXCC at < [email protected] > for an update to their record. Or, it can
be sent with the next submission for credit.
Bill Moore, NC1L, DXCC Manager, reports that the following Cambodian
operations are now approved for DXCC credit: XU7ABR, XU7ABT, XU7ABU
and XU7ABV. Contact DXCC to update your record at < [email protected] >,
or, just include it with your next submission.
Harry, W6DXO, received the following E-mail from Bill Moore, NC1L,
DXCC Manager, about HC2DX via PY3ZM. Here is Bill's response: "We have
received information from HC2DX, in writing, which states that PY3ZM
is his QSL Manager. Based on this information, DXCC is currently
accepting cards from HC2DX direct or via Michel Hamoniaux, PY3ZM. HC2DX
is the only station for which we accept PY3ZM QSLs.

Also, QSLs for TT8JLB are not being accepted. The reason given is that
the ARRL DXCC Desk has not received documentation. Terry, KG6S, informs
OPDX that he has received an E-mail from the operator, and it seems that
he has lost the documentation while traveling in Europe. The operator
also states it is too expensive to get another photocopy from Chad.
"Looks like it is time to work another TT station!!"
EP & YA, IRAN AND AFGHANISTAN. Stig, LA7JO (aka EP3UN), reports that he
is on his way to Afghanistan after which he will be on vacation. He expects
to return to Iran at the end of June.
FO, FRENCH POLYNESIA. Look for F8DQL to be active as FO/F8DQL every day,
around 0700z, from now through May 12th, from Tahiti's main island (OC-046,
DIFO : FO002). Activity will be on 21010/020 kHz and 28030 khz on CW. QSL
vi his home call.
FRENCH ISLANDS TO BE ACTIVATED. Yan, F0DSJ, informs OPDX that Dimitri/F0DSK,
Ronan/F5TJP and himself will activate the following French island this
week. The VHF activity will be done by F0DSJ and F0DSK. The HF activity
will be done by F5TJP. Their schedule is as follows:

HAM RADIO FAIR 2002. Dieter Dippel, DF4RD, would like to remind everyone
that European's biggest Ham Radio Event (app. 20,000 visitors) will take
place Friday, June 28th, through Sunday, June 30th, at Friedrichshafen,
Bodensee (Lake Constance), South-West Germany (close to the Swiss and
Austrian Border). A meeting of Contesters and DXers will be organized
as in previous years by the BCC (Bavarian Contest Club) and the RRDXA
(Rhein Ruhr DX Association) on Friday (RRDXA) and Saturday (BCC) evening.

IOTA NEWS.................
EU-048. Francois, F2GL, will be active from Houat Island, as F2GL/p,
for 5 days from May 6-10th. Activity will be on HF Bands
mainly on CW, with 100w barefoot into a G5RV antenna, and
some SSB by request. Emphasis will be on 40 meters. Other
Houat Island reference numbers are: DIFM AT016 (French Islands
Award), DDFM 56 (French Departments Award), Province Brittany
(Worked All French Provinces Award) and DFCF 56007 (French
Castles Award).
NA-NEW. Operators Rick/KL7AK, Blaine/KL7TG, Linda/NL7RE, Larry/KF6XC
and Jim/K9PPY will activate Deer Island, part of the Southern
Alaska Peninsula West group; an unnumbered IOTA island group.
They expect/plan to be on the island late in the evening on
the 31st of July, until mid-afternoon on the 5th of August.
They will use the callsign KL7AK. Their main station will be
a Kenwood TS-570S(G) HF transceiver with an Ameritron AL-80A
amp, using a Mosley Mini-33 tri-band Yagi up about 30 feet.
A Cushcraft R-7000 will be used for 40 and 80 meters. Rick,
KL7AK, states, "I have found during my many Alaska island
DXpeditions, that 20 meters is the optimum band here in Alaska.
We normally have propagation up to 20 hours a day. However,
we will operate 80 through 10 meters, both SSB and CW, including
the AO-27 and UO-14 Amateur Satellites. We will operate on or
near the IOTA frequencies on each band." The QSL Manager is Fred
Stenger, N6AWD, good in the callbook/Internet databases.
NA-091. Frank/VE7DP and Heinz/VA7AQ will try to activate an island
in the British Columbia Province North Group on May 11-12th.

IQ0, ITALY. The team of I0CUT, I0JBL, IK0LNN, IK0NFV, IK0PEA, IK0SME,
IZ0BXZ and possibly others will participate in the 2002 ARI International
Contest with special callsign, IQ0N, in the category Multi/Single. Their
activity will be on all bands and all modes. QSL via the bureau or direct
to IK0NFV.
JD1, OGASAWARA. Six JA operators will be active on all bands (includes
6 meters) and all modes from Ogasawara (AS-031) on June 8-10th. Their
callsigns will be JA1UII/JD1, JG1GGU/JD1, JH1HHC/JD1 JI1LET/JD1,
JK1KNB/JD1 and 7N2UTO/JD1. QSL via home callsigns. The details and logs

K1B, BAKER ISLAND. Activity is going strong. One of Hrane's, YT1AD, reports
stated that it took seven ship crew members, and 13 + 1 radio fanatics
almost 48 hours to set up three complete camps. The USA camp is operated
by KW4DA, N6TQS, Z32ZM and S56A. The Serbian camp is operated by YT1AD,
YU1DX, YU1AU and ZS6MG. The Russian camp is operated by RZ3AA, RA3AUU, RW3AH
(9X0A) and LY3NUM. Remember, all CW, RTTY, PSK and SSTV QSOs are via YT1AD:

This next item was not totally clear from the provider, but we will give
it a shot. Percy, CE7ZK, QSL Manager for CE7AOY/8 from Riesco Island
(December 17-20th, 2001) states that he has not received QSLs from the
following stations: I8XTX, IV3TOU, I4EAT, F9RM, N0YD, AA5AT and W9DWN.
Please send another card for quick reply. Percy states that he has not
received any E-mails for 4 months due to computer problems and is

SPECIAL AUSTRALIAN EVENTS.
The Wireless Institute of Australia (Victorian Division) will be
activating the call AX3ITU from 0000 hours UTC on May 17th until
0000 hours on May 18th to commemorate the 137th Anniversary of the
formation of the International Telegraph Union in Paris on May 17th,
1865. On behalf of the WIA, the station will be operated by members
of the Eastern and Mountain District Radio Club Inc, and QSL is either
direct via VK3ER, P.O. Box 87, MITCHAM, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA 3132 - or
via the bureau.
Paul, VK2HV, informs OPDX that he will be active as AX2ITU for 24
hours on May 17th between 0000-2359z. Activity is to celebrate the
International Telecommunications Union. Activity will be on 15 and
10 meters. Please QSL via the bureau or direct to VK2PS (Stephen
Pall - address is OK on QRZ.COM).
SPECIAL EVENT. Look for special event callsign II0FM to be used for the
"III Friendship Meeting" from May 20-26th. QSL via IZ0BTV.
VK9ML UPDATE AND STATISTICS. It was reported that all the logs from the
VK9ML operation are now available online on their Web page. Statistics
show that the VK9ML operation netted 50,950 QSOs: CW - 26,246; SSB- 23,188;
and RTTY 1,516.
VP8THU VIDEO IS AVAILABLE. James, 9V1YC, states, "Yes, finally, at long
last, the South Sandwich (VP8THU) DXpedition video is ready. The synopsis

This one is a bit more dramatic than the last few. Smashing 40-foot seas,
insane cliff-jumps into zodiacs, and thousands of penguins making a
tremendous racket. A bit more wild DX fun this time." :-)
XW, LAOS. Rod, EA7JX/EH7JX, informs OPDX that he is in contact with Larry,
XW1LLR, who has been working in the country for 8 years and has married
a native Vientiane wife in Laos. He reportedly has one TS850S and two
TS50S, and has begun putting up new antennas; "dipoles" in the jungle.
He said for now to QSL via the club station XW8KPL. Rod adds that Larry
has an 8 hectors farm for putting up a good antennas farm in the future.
Larry was heard this past weekend on the 14245 DX net around 1500z.
YL DXER INJURIED. Lenny, K5OVC, informed OPDX that well-known YL Nellie,
XE1CI, was hit by a car last week in her apartment house garage as she
was walking her dogs. The driver of the car said he did not see her. Nellie
had to have a hip replacement, but prior to going into surgery, her heart
acted up and she ultimately had to have a pacemaker put in. The good news
is that Nellie is home with nurses round the clock as she cannot bend or
get in a car for about 3 month or so. She is confined to bed. Nellie will
not be going to Dayton or Hamcom in Dallas. Lenny doesn't know if she will
be able to go to the YL meeting in Palermo, Italy. At this time she will
not be on the air as she has to find out if she can operate with a pacemaker
in her. Besides, Lenny doesn't think she can get to the radio. Lenny will
be keeping in touch with Nellie and will send us further updates on her
condition. She is a very special lady, and get well cards to her along with

YO, ROMANIA. Jean Michel, F6AJA, will be active again as YO/F6AJA for the
9th year from the QTH of YO8FZ from May 19-26th. He will be active only
during his free time.
WHAT WERE THOSE OEH, OEP AND OEY PREFIXES? After some confusion on the
band and on the DXClusters about callsigns like OEH6101 ... etc. on May
1st, Tom, DL8AAM, was nice enough to send OPDX information on the event:
"For some hours each year on May 1st they run the Austrian Emergency
and Disaster-Communications Training Contest on 80 and 30m. The SSB
operation on 30m is ok with the IARU rules under the point 'Emergency
communication'. Red Cross (OEH's), Police (OEP's) & Military (OEY's)
are licenced working OE-HAMs to train OPs of both radio services for
a possible interaction QSOs in case of an emergency/disaster. (SWL-)
QSL ok via OE-Bureau ! Stations active this year: OEH20 (Red Cross

Use the VOICE or FAX answering machine at 440-237-8208 which shares the
same phone line as BARF-80 BBS using a data/fax/phone switch. To access:
1) Dial Number. 2) Wait for first ring (the second ring should be a false
ring from the fax/data switch box) and then dial four quick ones ("1111").
(NOTE: Some FAX machines that send single "BEEPS" every second will not
have to do this step.) 3) The phone will pick up and after the "BEEP"
leave your voice message or FAX.

To All Amateurs:
The Midway-Kure DX Foundation and the member operators of the
DXpeditions, 3B9R Rodrigues - 1999, and K7K Kure Atoll, K4M Midway
Atoll - 1997, would like to update QSLing information so that those
who have had trouble getting cards or have not yet asked for a card
may get them for valid contacts. We believe that almost all people
have already gotten their cards in a timely fashion.
Please be aware that K7K and K4M are temporary callsigns that have
been reissued for use by others in the United States for their
short-term operations. We are receiving QSL's for operations that were
done later and elsewhere, not Kure and Midway. Also, we receive
repeated requests, sometimes in a demanding way, for cards to confirm
contacts that are not in the log. Even after repeated replies along
with multiple QSL's sent (for valid contacts) informing them of that
fact. We will not QSL for invalid contacts.
There are a few of requests asking for cards by people who had
callsign changes and don't know which callsign they used to make
contacts with the DXpedition, not to mention specific contact
information! These may or may not be answered depending on the
available time necessary to perform time consuming manual searches.
We are also aware (with Post Office confirmation) that a good number
of incoming cards were likely misrouted or discarded due to incorrect
address information (almost correct but not good enough) that had been
distributed (not by us) in some circles. We are disappointed with this
unfortunate occurrence and trust those affected will understand and
send another request (if they've not done so already).
QSL requests are being handled by different people depending on the
callsign / DXpedition. Please read the specific directions below for
the respective DXpedition.
We are sorry for any problems that some of you experienced in getting
cards for these operations. We are committed to getting every person a
card for any valid contact upon reasonable request. If you feel that
you have already sent in too many direct requests you may send an
email request with all QSO information to Kimo Chun, KH7U, at
[email protected], for special follow up. Please do not abuse this offer.
Thank you for your kind support for these operations. We do appreciate
the contacts and hope we can provide more contacts (and cards!) in the
future. If you have any questions please send them to Kimo Chun,

3B9R (Rodrigues Island), April 1999.
We have been informed that there has been a problem for some in
getting cards for this operation. We acknowledge that there were some
early problems for 3B9R that were mostly solved by changing to K7ZD as
the QSL manager. We do not believe there are any valid requests for
cards that have not been or if very recent will not be answered if we
have actually received your card. The QSL manager, K7ZD, is still
processing any requests that are received. Do NOT send any cards to
N7LVD. We are sorry if some cards may have been lost or not handled
properly in the past.
If you feel you have been somehow overlooked please send K7ZD your
card one more time with an SASE ($0.37 U.S. postage) for U.S.
destinations or a Self Addressed Envelope with a requested $1 U.S. or
a "New IRC" purchased / dated after 6 Jan 01. We would appreciate this
to help pay for the costs of QSLing. The U.S. Post Office has changed
their rules regarding the use of IRC's, especially older ones. Those
older than 7 Jan 01 are not redeemable for sufficient postage for "Air
Mail" delivery to most foreign destinations.

[email protected] for use in confirming receipt of your new QSL attempt.
