I believe I got your point.

A brute force probability that your scanner is on right frequency when the 
transmission starts is something like 25%, I believe. But then, maybe the 
missed fraction of the second in the beginning is not that fatal. I have 
never counted how long does it take to send <SYN><SYN><SOH> in ACARS. Was it 
2.4kbps and 8 bits per character? So it wont take long at all.

And no matter what is the probability, you seem to have an exellent hit rate 
anyway.
