Ed,
Your email was a very refreshing change from the usual run of the mill stuff
and almost read like a book. It is very frustrating when you have spent so
much effort in organising and setting things up only to be undone by QRM.
Were the Malaysian authorities inquisitive by your use of a scanner?
I remember a few years back 'pinging' a couple of Malaysian 737s in
Auckland. I'm not too sure what they were doing but I think they may have
been on charter or freight duties. Those logs are buried deep in a zip file
on an archive CD somewhere so I can't recall the registrations off hand.
Anyway, must have been a very interesting holiday for you.
Regards
Mike

Folks
Been on my travels again this time for a birdwatching holiday in the rain
forests of Sabah (the Malaysian bit of Borneo)
Took the PC so I could download the digital pictures from the camera, so
took a radio and used AirNav whenever I could
Logged during transit at KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport); and then
for most of a day in a hotel at Kota Kinabalu on Sabah
Logs at KLIA were initially on 131.55, but at a very quiet late night
session on the way back I found 131.45 active as well, but some local
interference meant I decoded very little of the activity on this frequency
a JAL MD11; and just one MAS B737
At Kota Kinabalu there seemed to be no local ground station and I was
picking up IN / ON / OUT / OFF messages from the MAS B737s as they
re-established ACARS contact some 5 minutes after take-off. Also a few
fly-overs with Garuda, SIA and Qantas (QF0001 en route to LHR!) noted
I tried logging when I was 6000' up Mount Kinabalu but I must have had an
outlook the 'wrong way' as I was logging about one MAS B737 a day!
Anyway for starters, here is the 131.55 squitter from KLIA

And here are the two squitters from 131.45 at KLIA

All in all not a great result for lugging the PC half-way around the world,
but I don't suppose I will get the MAS B737s elsewhere!
