I agree on using phased verticals on 80. I use four MFJ 1792 verticals in phase with a Comtek control box, and have worked all but 4 countries on that band. But with just 2 verts you will still have a big signal. Also agree on consulting the ON4UN lowband book.

What about a simple pair of phased
verticals, say 2x HF2V or similar,
spaced 90 degrees.
That would give you some F/B and a
bit of gain to help offset some of
the ground losses.
Check the ON4UN books for more ideas.
