Wanting to know more about the KDKA cages, I emailed Tom W3WGM, and he replied:

Sorry Dave, but it was not me. I was CE at KDKA in the late 70's but never did any papers on antennas.

Tom, W3WGM

Maybe he just talked about it to you?

I see a loop antenna here, albeit an 'E' loop sitting on it's own insulated above ground platform..

You can also see it as a top loaded vertical..

To me it makes the most sense to feed just like that and above/away from lossey ground..

The first thing is that you pick up 3 db just for not feeding half the power in to ground radials..

Two paws up on this one.. Plus the big fat vertical part is relatively ultra low 'R' where most of the current is..

The effective height is probably a pretty good number too..

It would be the best mobile antenna to ever crown the WA1HLR cadaverlac, yessir a mighty pretty 160m mobile antler fer sure..

I'll see your king and raise you one solid 6" copper strap vertical 'I' loop and get two nulls for free to protect those other AM stations and therefore allow you to run MORE power..

Yanks come up with the darndest things!!

Next time, see the old wire cage vertical @ early KDKA and what it did on 1020 kc...
Tom Monahan W3WGM has the whole story on that one.. WOWZA

The HEBA - AM's Real Estate Relief - with Grady Moates - TWiRT Ep. 460

TWiRT - This Week in Radio Tech

Grady Moates is a “hands-on” broadcast engineer. Known widely for his audio processing expertise, Grady’s attention has more recently been on proving the performance of a novel antenna design. The High Efficiency Broadband Antenna (HEBA) - after years of additional research and real-world testing and proving - is now FCC approved. Grady explains how a HEBA help AM stations, especially those with real-estate opportunities.
