Hi Neil,
From one ancient radio enthusiast to another! I think we are the same age!
I agree that there is something wrong with your Wellbrook loop.  Over the five years I have been on 630M, with an experimental license, and then as K4LY, I have done hundreds of A/B tests using my MW TX antenna, flag antennas, KAZ antennas, a HB and a commercial  PA0RDT type amplified whip, and the Wellbrook loop.  The Wellbrook compares favorably with all of them, and at 15' above ground on a TV  rotator is my go-to receive antenna on 630M and 2200M.  Only directional  BIG flag and KAZ antennas, or beverages which I don't have room for here,  all obviously not rotatable, provide a better SNR in my experience and testing.   The Wellbrook loop is a stellar antenna for MW and has a large following among BCB DXers.  I would think that a working Wellbrook loop a few feet above ground and as far away from your and other houses as possible would be your best bet for 630M reception.

Well, the W loop that I put outside on the driveway did not decode anything on 630m overnight. It seems to be deaf at LMF.  It was working ok on 20m, but as I moved down to the lower bands it got increasingly deaf. I think there is something wrong in the active amplifier at the bottom of that loop.

This morning I switched back to my LOTW antenna just in time to decode Rudy again [N6LF].

I have another active amplifier I can try on another W loop tonight. Stay tuned... hihi
