couple other points i forgot:

Observations on noise and initial gain adjustment should be done near
solar noon so any changes from say adding a choke, etc., can be
observable.  When atmospheric noise starts to set in, adjust the gain
(preamp/att) as needed

Some may be wondering.... whats the difference between adjusting the "RF
Gain" (ie. IF gain) and AGC doing the same thing....

Unlike older analog rigs where AGC was implemented in the IF, most
modern hybrid rigs (like the K3) that are really an SDR w/ an analog
front-end, the dominant AGC is performed in the digital (DSP) domain.
In the case of the K3, there is a hardware (IF) AGC that is only
triggered under extreme signal levels (S9+30??) to limit what makes it
to the second mixer and ADC.  Therefore, under normal conditions, the IF
should be running at full gain and where it's IMD characteristics are
optimal.
