What a delightful story. Thanks for sharing, Dave.
It was nice hearing the voice of Joe Hertzberg, then K3JH, later N3EA,
he and I both had the idea to get one of the released USCG Auxiliary
call signs that were released in 1977 to the amateur service. When I
talked to him when I visited his home in 1977 in Bryn Maher, PA I
operated his 120 foot Big Bertha array, he had a full sized 40 meter 3
element beam on it, and strung at the ends of the booms of that
antenna and his 8 element 10 meter beam at the 110 foot level, he had
a 75/80 meter full sized 2 element quad antenna with a switch box to
add inductance so it could be used on 3.5 or 3.8 MHz. It was 90
degrees off on the big rotor box, but Joe had an alternate label for
it to give you the correct bearing scale.
I used to work Joe, N3EA from N1EA/MM all over the world, if USA was
coming in, he'd always have a good signal.
He ran the RCA Vacuum Tube plant in Camden, NJ and he loved to play
organ just like my friend and fellow radio officer, Edwiin "Jay"
Quinby, who lived in a converted firehouse and had a pipe organ and
various precussion instruments rigged up to a keyboard he played in
his home in Summit, NJ. Jay was one of those who had a current loop
rented from AT&T for the 1975 World Series games in Boston. I used to
have a photo of a bearded telegrapher with a sounder and Vibroplex in
the Boston Red Sox press booth sending out the box scores. Jan and
others from the metropolitan NYC area, Connecticut, NY, and PA paid
monthly for a telegraph circuit which they all had in their homes, and
on this special occasion, they paid for a line to be dropped to
Boston. What a hoot that must have been for the radio and TV
reporters to see a pressman with a Vibroplex and a clicking sounder.
