I think there's a need for a careful general review of variable inductors,
taps, shorted loops, variometers, etc, in theory, modeling and
experimentally.  I hope to get on that project next winter.  I have great
tools for that project but far too many distractions over the summer!!

 

In the mean time take a look at John Molnar's September 2017 CQ article on a
bucket inductor.  Lots of useful information.
