That transistor, apparenly, activates an input attenuator for frequencies below 1500 kHz. 

Shorting that transistor removes that attenuation.

ALL modern transceivers attenuate incoming signals below 1500 kHz, since when they are 
used to listen to AM BC stations, most of those stations are so close, their strong signals 
can cause all kinds of problems at the receiver. Intermod, etc.

My TS-940SAT has that "feature", and so does my FT-890.

The receivers are, supposedly, good down to 100 kHz, but since that attenuator is active for 
ALL frequencies below 1500 kHz, it must be removed or bypassed in order to REALLY use 
those receivers below that frequency.

Otherwise, you can't hear a darned thing...much...below 1500 kHz.
