Roger Graves is exactly right: "What you see will depend on how good the
attached antenna is how low [the SDR's] noise is."
I have been using a WinRadio G33 SDR since 2012. It is a wonderful machine
(fancy-named the "Excalibur Pro"). So far, lots of 630m signals and at
least one 2200m signal.
Vertical antennas work best for me on VLF, because they escape the 60 cycle
harmonics the loops pick up from nearby power-lines, although the big loop,
many square meters capture area, is more sensitive.
The internal noise on the frequency of interest is an issue with the G33
for SAQ on 17.2 KHz. WinRadio says its new G65 solves the problem.
John Staples, W6BM has had great success with tuned loops (and a Collins
389). Their directionality helps. We (the CHRS VLF Interest Group) are
hoping that what we've learned will translate to 2200m.
We have written several related articles for the California Historical
Radio Society Journal. I'll send PDFs to anyone in the 600m Group who wants
one. Several of us, including John Stuart, KM6QX have logged all three
Russian Alpha stations from 11.904 KHz to 14.881 KHz, and lots of other VLF
stations including experimental licensees.
