Back in the 1970s I worked with a fellow doing propagation research. He had one of two
"solar prominence telescopes" which existed in the western hemisphere. He would plot solar
prominences, and compare those with Sudden Enhancements of Signals (SES) at VLF.

He used many RAK receivers to monitor the U.S. Navy VLF stations 24/7/365 and recorded
their levels, each receiver tuned permanently to one of the stations.

He had the RAKs mounted in several regular 6 foot tall racks, and had their recorders,
Rustrak types, mounted on top of the racks, clacking away.

Later he used RBL receivers, SRR-11s, and AN/URM-6Bs.

However, he found the RAK to be more suitable for that sort of work than the later model
receivers since the RAK had no AGC, among other advantages.

The SESs were VERY apparent at a sudden onset of any ionospheric disturbance, no
matter how short.

You can look up both Sudden Enhancement of Signal, and Sudden Enhancement of
Atmopherics on the Internet and find some interesting information on these effects.

He monitored for both SES and SEA.
