From w7gj at q.com Fri Jan 8 23:18:17 2016 From: w7gj at q.com (Lance Collister, W7GJ) Date: Sat, 9 Jan 2016 04:18:17 +0000 Subject: [50mhz] 6m EME DXpedition to T8 and V6 - PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY Message-ID: <56908A09.7010907@q.com> Happy New Year Magic Banders! This email is just to give you plenty of advance time to get ready to work a new one (or two) on 6m ;-) I just got airline tickets to arrive in T8 (Palau) on August 17 for 10 nights. That corresponds with the optimum days of the month for 6m EME, and includes days with windows to moonset in eastern North America and moonrise in western Europe. I am hoping to be able to get to an internet cafe from time to time to provide updates while I am in Palau. I am still looking for a good site to use in Palau. I also am still awaiting the license, and will send out another announcement with the exact grid locator and callsign and upload a web page for T8 when I receive the license. In the meantime, here is the tentative operating schedule from T8: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/T8%20Schedule.xls Since I missed contacts with so many of you last summer, I am going back to V6M for a short trip. Yep, I must be a glutton for punishment! But the deserving got left hanging last August, so I will provide another chance ;-) I have already arranged for renewal of my V6M license, and been assured I will have it before August, so that is a done deal. Hopefully I will be able to operate for 5.5 moon passes this time around. The times chosen include an optimum time of the month for 6m EME, as well as good windows for moonset in eastern North America and moonrise in western Europe. I am hoping that is enough time to catch up with the stations I should have worked last summer. I have not developed a web site yet for V6M in 2016, but you can refer to the previous one for most of the same details, the grid locator, the QTH, all the procedures, etc.: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Micronesia2015.htm The tentative operating schedule from V6M next August is here: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/V6M%20Schedule.xls Right now, I don't have any expectation for any internet access from V6M, but please look for me based on the above schedule. As you can see, it will be a very hectic trip, with 4 days devoted to set up and tear down and almost twice that many spent in traveling and/or waiting for flights. However, I don't plan to do V6M again in the foreseeable future, so if you still need it, please gear up and be ready for the short window coming up at the end of August and beginning of September! When I get the websites up, I will also include pdf versions of the above schedules in case anyone still hasn't dowloaded the free Excel spreadsheet viewer or Open Office. I am not sure my use of the KX3 was responsible for missing any contacts last summer, but I am going to try to use a different rig this time just to make sure none of us have any question about the stability of the signal. Please be forewarned that both those areas experience high TEC in the ionosphere overhead for many of the hours of the day. Last summer, the most challenging TEC conditions at V6M seemed to be during my moonrise, with the best EME cndx on my moonset. I think this summer the cndx from V6M will be more favorable during my moonrise, with my moonset possibly being more subject to ionospheric interference. I have exceptional moonset from V6M, though, so I am not so worried about lack of success toward EU. I will be operating from T8 enough days to give both moonset and moonrise directions different times of day, which I hope will provide enough variety to work around any possible TEC problems. This rig does dual receive (same band only) and has a real time band scope which shows you the activity on the band. Also has a built in CW memory keyer, built in autotuner, DSP noise reduction and autonotch, an SWR meter, and plenty of memories. It does 100 watts on all bands. You can read more about the features on this radio here: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/hamhf/756.html The dual receive function is wonderful. You can leave one receiver on 50.125 or 50.110 all of the time listening to the calling frequency while working stations on a different part of the band. The band scope gives a great picture of where activity is during a 6 meter opening. This unit is in excellent condition, looks new except for a slight scratch or 2 on the top cover that are very hard to see. The screen is fine on it with no lines. It comes with the hand mic, power cord, and box. I purchased this recently from one of the service techs at Radioworld in Canada, so it was put through it paces by someone who knows what they are doing. I ran it yesterday in the NAQP with really good results. I am only selling it because I want to improve my VHF/UHF/Satellite setup I am asking $625 plus shipping costs. I can take paypal/check/MO.. 73 John AF5CC From w7gj at q.com Tue Jan 19 16:35:33 2016 From: w7gj at q.com (Lance Collister, W7GJ) Date: Tue, 19 Jan 2016 21:35:33 +0000 Subject: [50mhz] Fwd: [PNWVHFS] VHF Super Conference -- April 14-17, 2016 -- Sterling, VA (Washington DC) In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <569EAC25.5090808@q.com> -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [PNWVHFS] VHF Super Conference -- April 14-17, 2016 -- Sterling, VA (Washington DC) Date: Tue, 19 Jan 2016 16:06:16 -0500 From: Map1 Reply-To: map1 at mapinternet.com To: WRemailer-NEWS WRemailer-NEWS , WRemailer-Packrats WRemailer-Packrats , WRemailer-MW , WRemailer-FLWSS , WRemailer-PNWest WRemailer-PNWest , WRemailer-VHF WRemailer-VHF , WRemailer-WSWSS , Microwave WRemailer-DixieGHz Hello VHF-UHF-Microwave Weak Signal Enthusiast???s: The First Ever, VHF SUPER Conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Washington-Dulles International Airport, Sterling, VA, April 14-17, 2016. It is a heavy duty commercial unit that has been converted for ham usage. It has 80 channels which have been loaded with just about every simplex and repeater that one can think of. This unit consists of a very heavy duty unit with mounts in the truck, under the seat, etc. There is a remote "head" where the mic plugs in, and which selects volume, squelch, scan, channel, etc., plus an external speaker. The power cord is very heavy duty, since it requires up to 25 amps at 13 V DC. Also included is the service manual, which is really an operating/service manual combined, and which looks like it is new. The unit works fine, with great audio, and looks fine also. Only $90. Six meter "Hamstick" mobile antenna This is a Lakeview Model 9106, true Hamstick mobile antenna. It has a standard 3/8 inch 24 thread for mounting, and is about 4 feet long, so it could be used with a 3/8 -24 mag mount, if desired. It is rated to handle 600 watts PEP. This one works fine, looks close to new, and includes paper work (cutting instructions) for $20. Radio Shack 21-541 Powered Communications Speaker: This speaker is a bit unique. It is a communications speaker, but it is also powered, much like computer speakers. Specs say the frequency response is 300 to 3000 Hz, which is ideal for communications. It is rated to have 8 watts output, which means you could hear it in over most any noisy environment, such as high noise mobile installations. It needs 13 V DC at up to 1.5 amps, although current is very low if the volume is low. This unit has a nice gimble mounting bracket, making it great for mobile use. This unit works fine and looks close to new. It even includes a single page of paper work, as if that is needed. Only $22. Other Communications Speakers: Realistic 21-549 A This speaker is about 4 inches square and about 2 inches deep. It is rated for 5 watts, has an 8 ohm impedance, and is listed as a 300 to 3000 Hz frequency response, making it ideal for communications. It has a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) mono plug, as used by most modern rigs. It is black in color, looks great, and sounds great. $12 Realistic 21-549 A As above, but NEW, in original box. $15 Vanco SPB-6 Similar to Realistic 21-549 above, but is considered a noise cancelling speaker. 10 Watt rating. Still in original box, new. $18 Drake TV-1000 Low Pass TVI Filter This filter may also be used on the low end of six meters, as well as on HF. It is good for 1000 W below 30 MHz, and about 200 W up to 52 MHz. $30 Crystals for Ham Bands: All of the following crystals are in standard FT-243 holders. Crystal frequencies are in KHz. (MHz in parenthesis.) 10 meters - Actual crystal is 7 MHz range, which multiplies times four to give 10 meter frequencies. 7325 (29.3), 7375 (29.5), 7395 (29.58), 7400 (29.6), 7404 (29.615), 7410 (29.64), Six meter crystals 8 MHz fundamental multiplies times six to give 6 meters. 8354 (50.124), 8375 (50.25), 8410 (50.46), 8475 (50.85), 8480 (50.88), 8500 (51.0), 8575 (51.45), 8600 (51.6), 8620 (51.72) Two meter crystals 8 MHz fundamental multiplies times 18 to give 2 meters. 8006.67 (144.12), 8040 (144.72), 8060 (145.08), 8073 (145.314), 8075 (145.35) All crystals are $8 each. Prices do not include shipping from Florida. I also have many other accessories available such as many different types of microphones, HTs, HF, VHF and UHF rigs, HF and VHF/UHF antennas, etc. Just too many to list here. The stock rig contains a number on non-temperature compensated caps that allow it to drift - sometimes badly. If this is your first 6M rig and you can get it for a song, it will certainly give you access to six meters but you'll soon be looking for a new rig if you get serious about six. There are others out there that can be had for a reasonable price if you can find them that I would consider far better entry rig's such as the Icom IC-551D, Icom IC-726, Kenwood TS-60, Kenwood TS-660, Kenwood TS-680 & Yaesu FT-650, etc...
