As many of you know, K7SGP and I activated DN34 over Field Day weekend, since that is the best weekend of the summer for 6m Es. The largest opening took place Sunday night local time after Field Day was over and most of the East Coast stations were asleep. Still, between the two of us, over 200 stations now have DN34 in their log on 6m. The site used was a 7550' knoll in Idaho just south of Lemhi Pass, overlooking the Continental Divide and the border with Montana. The equipment used was the same as I will use during my upcoming 6m EME DXpeditions. This was the first time I used my little KX3 in the field and it proved stable enough to copy EME signals from SM7FJE (-23 dB inJT65A mode ) during moonrise, but the high Degradation and non-reciprocal polarity were not conducive to completing a contact. The amplifier was an M2 6M-1000, the power supply was a Meanwell RSP-2000, the feedline was 25' of LMR600 coupled to 50' of LMR600 Ultra Flex (the part going up the mast and around the guy ring), and the antenna was a 6M5XHG yagi on a 24' homebrew mast. The T Matching blocks on my antennas have UHF fittings. One block center pin had deteriorated and was arcing on transmit. Had affected my receive for quite a while. When I took the antenna down to fix it is when I found the problem. My neighbor had a T Matching block from a older 6M5. Cool, we cut it to the length of the 6M5X block Additionally it had a N connector. So that was also. good. After replacement and up in the air I did some tests. NO ECHOS AND CANT HEAR A THING OFF THE MOON. I think the phase of the 6M5 modified match is different. So will be taking the antenna off once again and replacing the match with one that I know is in phase with the rest. I haven't confirmed this yet, hope to do so tomorrow, but it is the only think I can think would give me the effect I am seeing. So just a caution about trying to match the 6M5 antenna with a 6M5X. The modification kit just has you cut the length of the matching block elements. They may be out of phase!! These photos from V63JB provide some idea of the devastation to the island: https://goo.gl/photos/49CiKk7KEVmTN5Rm7 Miraculously, there were no fatalities on Falalop, but the island is still in disrepair. Since all of the few islanders are involved in rebuilding efforts, it was suggested that I cancel my trip next month. However, I assured them that I will not get in anyone's way, and will provide my own food and water. They finally agreed to let me come under those conditions, so the V6M operation is STILL ON :-) So, please PLEASE read all the information on my web page below: http://www.bigskyspaces.com/w7gj/Micronesia2015.htm I will be providing updates on my status and the stations worked via the Magic Band EME email list, so please watch there for news after I reach the island. If you do not subscribe to that group, please ask someone you know to forward the updates to you. The KX3 performed well on digital modes during my two recent mountaintop 6m grid DXpeditions, so I will be using the KX3 for the first time on a 6m EME operation. Traveling by myself, and needing to take all the extras such as food and water, I just will not have space to carry the K3. As usual, though, I will be taking the 6M8GJ with the manual elevation mount, LMR600 low loss feedline, and the M2 6M-1000 amplifier. Because this location is so far west, my I will only have a window with Europe on their moonrise, and my moonrise will only take place an hour or so before moonset along the East Coast of North America. I probably will not be QRV when my moon is above 45 degrees elevation, so if this is a problem for you, please email me before August 20 (the date I am leaving). Because of the short common moon windows, and shorter planned period of operation (7 moon passes), I will be pedaling as hard as I can to make as many contacts as quickly as possible ;-) The planned Operating Schedule is shown on my V6M web page above. If you have elevation, please look for me early in the operation while my moon is still low. 6m EME cndx look optimum over the last weekend in August, so I hope to be able to complete with the smaller horizon-only stations then. MNI TNX for your support and for making this operation a success! GL and I hope to be able to complete with many of you :-) VY 73, Lance -- Lance Collister, W7GJ (ex WA3GPL, WA1JXN, WA1JXN/C6A, ZF2OC/ZF8, E51SIX, 3D2LR, 5W0GJ, E6M, TX5K, KH8/W7GJ, V6M) P.O.
