Hi Danny,
I didn't actually mention RTTY, since it isn't used much as a weak-signal
mode except by RTTY specialists. I have fun with RTTY on HF, but it is not
as effective as CW for weak-signal communication. JT65, though, is a
different matter as Lance makes clear.
I'm not against any mode. That's what's so great about ham radio.
Whatever floats your boat...

Which is why the software does not make the entire exchange itself, human
involvement is required. You say RTTY is ok, can you copy RTTY without some
kind of emulator? The computer still does the bulk of the work.
I agree, the line between the operator and the machine is getting very
fuzzy but it is a little late to try to separate those that do from those that
don't.

The EME community has been living with this issue for 10+ years now.
Some people choose to work only CW, some (the non-CW ops) only JT65, and
some
use both. From time to time the suggestion comes up to put JT65 QSOs in
a
separate category, but so far it hasn't happened. Let the discussion
continue...

Into the breach....
As an HF DXer of the old school I see these exotic modes differently.
I have no problem with RTTY, PSK or some of the other digital modes.
What I see as not right is when only the PC hears the signal. If it's
a zillion DB below the human ear copying but the PC is decoding it I
think that's not a QSO. If only the PCs are copying each other is that
a QSO? Why even be in the shack? Just set software to detect a signal &
reply. When you physically enter the radio room your PC can tell you
what 'you' worked.
This is ONLY my opinion. Don't go off if you disagree. We all see
things differently. I'm not saying you are wrong. We just see things
in a different way.
