GM Lance,

I agree 110% with everything you say below... Just a couple of hopefully brief comments for the lists in your distribution:

(1) While WE are real excited about how the WSJT modes can make 6m an exciting place to be when there is no Es propagation (and even when there is, in terms of weak-signal DXing), there are those who take a more curmudgeonly perspective on it, and feel using these modes towards VHF awards (like VUCC, FFMA, WAS, DXCC, etc.) is somehow “cheating” and that a separate set of awards for WSJT only should be created to keep the original awards “pure”. Personally, I think this is rubbish, but the movement is fairly strong. I know you’re familiar with this from the EME community, but it has spread inexorably beyond those folks out into the general VHF world as more people find out what the WSJT modes are capable of in a variety of operating contexts.

(2) While the level of activity on 6m WSJT modes is and has always been a lot of fun and very gratifying, we need MUCH GREATER and more consistent participation, especially meteor-scatter (m/s). WSJT m/s can be done very successfully with a medium-sized station using a traditional horizon-fixed yagi antenna. A top-tier 6m station, such as is necessary to consistently work EME on this band, is not required for m/s – though people trying to do m/s with 50 watts to a low dipole are likely to be disappointed. M/s is not like Es, and 400 watts or so (the TE-Systems 0552G brick is very popular at this power level) to a 5 to 7 element yagi at least 35 feet up should be considered a middle-of-the-road configuration for m/s. This sort of configuration will work very well, especially if one’s local ambient noise level is reasonable in most directions. Such a station will make hundreds of m/s contacts on a “dead” band using WSJT FSK441.

Bill W5WVO

Hello David,

WOW - MNI TNX for an AMAZING operation! I think you need a vacation now! We sure
appreciate all the effort and expense you put into activating all those grids. I
agree with other comments - I think it is important for you to submit an article for
publication telling about your experience.

The whole grid hunting thing, while popular on 6m for many years in EU, is just now
finally starting to really catch on here in the USA, undoubtedly spurred on by the
FFMA. I think one of big reasons for this relatively recent growth in interest has
been the increase in number of people with digital mode capability. It seems like
more and more stations are being equipped for digital modes on HF, and that
automatically gives them the capability for ISCAT and FSK441 on 6m.

Still, many people are not aware of what can be done with these modes when there is
no Es... and it would be very helpful to spread the word and tell them what is going
on. Many, I am sure, would be surprised that there is so much activity on 6m using
digital modes, and that it all centers around using the WSJT modes, and where they
can find it. I think it is just a matter of time before ISCAT becomes a popular mode
for working international DX on those long haul multi hop paths, and when that starts
to happen, we will see another huge increase in the use of digital modes on 6m.

Once again, many thanks for your extraordinary operation! I look forward to
receiving the QSL cards from you for dozens of new grids ;-)
