[50mhz] Ranger 6m radio and power spikes?

I've had a Ranger 5054dx100 in my pickup, had no problems, but due to space constraints under the dash of my pickup, bought a Yaesu FT857D to be able to work 10 meters too & eventually the rest of the HF bands.
The Ranger had better receive than the Yaesu, space & desire to be able to work more than one frequency lead to the change, as the Ranger took up too much under dash real estate, as my 5 speed gear shift was only inches from becoming a knuckle buster when shifting into 3rd gear. (Guess I could have kept it, but reaching for under the glove-box to change settings (Other than frequency), would have been a distraction. (Had no problem selling it, had several bidders for the radio & sold for about $ 350. about this time last year.)
