In Houston IIRC the local ABC affiliate has 5 - 6 microwave
transmissions sites in addition to microwave relay capacity on their
helicopter, so why use gas guzzling vans to run around town all day,
when a smaller crossover SUV can do the job at half the cost..
Cell phone video is improving in quality too, some on the ground
reporters are covering breaking events with cell phones before vans
can arrive on the scene. The helicopters used only for major events,
but with a city of the size of Houston, with city limits that run 50
mils from one side of town to the other, the media use every means
available, including remote roof top TV cameras on office buildings &
cameras along the freeways that all the TV stations have access to
(See: www.houstontranstar.org/ & look under Houston Traffic
Conditions for Real Time Traffic Map & click Traffic cameras, these
operate 24/7, the website only offers freeze frames that are updated
every 15 minutes, while the TV stations get higher resolution real
time video.).
