I have reluctantly come to the place where I am hoping to sell my Amplex
KW-62 amplifier that was designed to work very nicely on both 6 and 2
meters, one band at a time. It is a commercially built amplifier dating from
1958 and reviewed in QST in July 1958.
It is unique in that it has a dual band grid circuit but used swappable
plate tank circuits and is similar to the W2GN amps in appearance though a
bit more attractive IMHO. I only have the 6 meter head but the QST article
shows pictures of the 2 meter head which I think could be easily
constructed.
A blower and filament transformer is built in to the amp which measures
about 12 inches wide, by 7 inches deep by 8 inches high, a rather compact
package. When I bought the amp a few years ago, I constructed a power supply
in a matching size chassis. It is essentially a clone of a Collins 30L-1
supply using a 30L-1 transformer and newly produced rectifier and capacitor
filter board. A bias and regulated screen supply is included using a new
Hammond power transformer. I designed the supply around the ideas used in my
Collins KWS-1 power supply and a tune and operate position is included for
tune up.
The Amplex has two Simpson meters, one is the PA current meter and the other
is used to switch between grids and screens of the 4CX250B's so the loads on
each tube can be balanced.
Using my ICOM 7000 at only 15 watts drive, I was able to get 500 to 600
watts out of the amp. The tubes (Amprex) appear to have had very little use
on them.
I would like to sell to someone in the US or Canada to keep shipping costs
reasonable. I am asking $400 plus shipping and any special packing that I
may have to buy though I always try and use what I have.
Pictures are of course available for seriously interested parties. Please
contact me directly if interested. Thanks for the bandwidth!
