[50mhz] [TowerTalk] [Mw] TV Channels 2-6 Post Transition

Roger,

The OLD RC channels weren't in the 50MHz range...they were on even 100kHz
spaced channels in the 53 MHz range...
(53.1, 53.2, etc) which played havoc with FM rptrs trying to make decent
bandplans...but then we still don't have a decent NATIONAL PLAN no thanks to
the ARRL and the politics of the ARRL's Repeater Advisory Committee in the
90s)
When the band is open, I HEAR no one up there.....most SSB activity rarely
gets above 50.2...when the MUF is above 50.2, it usually stops before
getting to 51MHz...so there are a lot of times SSB is open but FM on 52.525
is not.

PCM gear on 6 IS used in a lot of places in Texas...on the 20kHz channels of
50MHz...the AMA discourages 53MHz and if you want to be covered by their
insurance, you damn sure better be on 50 and not 53MHz.....otherwise, you
are liable!

However, I would still go with 72/76Mhz gear........except you can get a
clear 50MHz channel at a field more often than not...with TV2 going away in
a LOT of areas, 6 is getting to be a LOT quieter on 6/12 and we may hear
MORE buzzing around 51MHz......MAYBE...but education would keep the idiots
(maybe) off the freqs...I say maybe because some IDIOT did try to run a 50.4
to a 51.xx AM rptr a while back....claimed it was hurting no one....AHHH
DUMMY the rules state NO RPTRS BELOW 51.00000 period...they finally took it
off....so much for self policing anymore...its becoming more and more like
CB...
Try to tell someone you cant do that...and they would just as well kill
you!!!

When the 6-meter band actually opens that area is packed. I sure
wouldn't want a $5,000 plus model controlled on those frequencies. I
doubt even most of today's hams are aware of their existence. Only
those of us from the "old days" when that was highly popular. Even then
there were problems, probably more so than today when digital is about
the only mode used.

Wayyy back...in the 60's or maybe earlier, a friend who was a ham and RC
modeler lost a small plane when a station came on about a mile away and
the plane failed to respond. He found the wings outside a greenhouse.
The rest was inside.

I can't imagine any ham in their right mind using any section of six as
the risk is just too great. I wouldn't even use a learners model in
there. They might get away with it for years but sooner or later, some
one some where will come on with the inevitable result.... At least
today's *good* RC gear is much less prone to interference than the stuff
we used to use.
