I can't speak to how well Hy-Gain antennas were made pre-MFJ but I can attest
that I have no problems with their quality over the past 10 years. I had a 6el. HG
yagi at 140ft, along with "probably" too many other vhf antennas. Everything worked
fine for 5 or 6 years until a windstorm, not uncommon in West Texas, cleaned off the
tower. The mast broke at the thrust bearing and I was off the air on 3 bands!
Maybe the pair of 18 el. CC 2m beams broke the HG's fall but the HG 6m beam survived
with only 4 bent elements. It's back up and on the air.
I've had a m2 5el, a 5el. F9FT and a 3el CC through the years and mechanically,
they just don't stand-up to the sturdiness of the HyGain. I have a 4el. HG that
we use when we rover out west.
