I've used a FM-only scanner in the past.  Set it on 50.125 with a loose
squelch and the volume up high-ish.  All I needed was to hear the squelch
tear open to know a new Es opening was afoot (or, that my ham neighbor
down the street was trying to get a hold of me....)
Very inexpensive.
