[50mhz] Openings on 6

Hi Bob,
We did have what I would call an "anomalous" opening (it's not really
sporadic-E season yet) between New Mexico and southern CA for a couple of
hours yesterday, with very strong (S9++) signals -- but the guys I talked to
out there weren't hearing Texas. As far as I could tell, the opening was
pretty limited in area. This was the first Es opening here in over six
weeks -- a harbinger of things to come! We usually get one or two "off
season" openings as the start of the spring/summer Es season draws closer.
Like John NE0P said, just wait a few weeks. :-)
And if by "not looking in the right places" you meant frequency, just
monitor the calling frequency (50.125). All 6M openings start there and
spread upwards toward 50.200 as QRM increases. The stronger and more
widespread the opening, the further the activity moves up the band.
You can also monitor the CW beacon frequencies (50.060-50.080) and keep an
eye on the 50 MHz propagation log web pages. But really, unless you have a
super-sharp yagi array (not ideal for monitoring a "dead" band), if
anything's going to happen for your area, you'll hear it first on 50.125.
Hope to work you this summer, Bob --
