To get on the air quickly for SSB any of the halo / loop antennas work
great.  I have a KB6KQ loop that I use for rover / portable SSB and
like it.

To get on the air quick for FM you should have a vertical of some
sorts, especially for local contacts.  One of my finest six meter
contacts was with KG4YUW.  He was using a VX-5R and a dipole in the
attic with what, 2 watts, MAYBE.  I was on my FT-736 with a 3L yagi @
25' and oh lets say 10-12 watts.

ALL ON FM NO LESS.

We have a club member, KA5GLX who DXCC'd on six using a MFJ 9406 &
KB6KQ loop at about 40' just to prove it could be done.
