I am looking for a 6 meter mobile/portable 6 meter
rig, and have a chance to get an Icom 505. I had one
of these a couple of years ago briefly, but had to
return it before I got to do much with it. I like the
features of the radio, but am wondering about the
performance. I asked one local ham who had 1, and he
replied "It's a piece of garbage. Don't waste your
time." He said both the receive and transmit were
pretty bad on it. That is curious to find out.
Anyway, have others who have used the radio found the
same thing? I would be using the built in antenna at
times. I have compared it to a Yaesu FT690RII, and
think I like the Icom better because you can leave the
batteries in it, and still run it off of 12 volts at
10 watts, without having to snap on the amp and take
off the battery case, etc.
I would appreciate any additional comments about this
radio before I make a decision on way or another.
