I tend to agree.  You can buy one of those dual 3/8"-24 "dipole builders" and if you're wanting
dual band capablity get a pair of Hustler Buck-Busters Mod # SF-2 since they'll load up on 50 MHz
as well.  It won't be quite as good on 6 as cutting to old CB whips down but you will have dual
band capablity.

If you're looking for a simple vertical antenna and you have a tower or some stick in the air I'd
just put a side arm made from alumninum angle iron and a 3/8"-24 mount and just clamp it to the
tower leg with U-bolts.
