I would say, experiment, and see what actually works best.
Won't hurt, and that way, you can tell more of us what worked out best.
I would try 1/4 (0.25) wave and work down.
I'd also use my analyzer for best match, etc., though it is possible to do
well with an SWR bridge alone.
I have tested a fox hunt beam (tape measure with hairpin match) on my
analyzer, having built it and adjusted it with only an SWR bridge at the
time. Amazing that it came out with about a 48-49 ohm impedance on the
analyzer.
I'm into building antennas for repeaters just now, and may try some folded
dipoles for 440.
Also will try a small 440 beam as well, for link/control. Wish it was as
easy with 6 meters, but I do have a nice 4 element Hy-Gain type 6 meter beam
that does quite well, though I do need to make a new coax balun for it. But
at 10' boom, it's a bit long, maybe, for what you want. remember, your
driven element will be about 9.25' (if my rusty calculation is correct.).
Reflector should be several inches more.
