[50mhz] Icom 505 battery question

I recently purchased an Icom 505 that came without the
power cord.  Want to put come batteries in it to test
it out until I can find a power cord.  It is set up
for 9 c cell nicads, but the rig will run on 12 volts
thru the back jack.  Can I put C cell alkilines in the
radio, or is the extra voltage going to damage it?
