Hi VA3KIS,
I would advise the icom 910. This modern radio will give you 100w all mode
right
out of the box. Otherwise buy a used TS790A and get/built yourself a nice
PA.
For the homebrew yagi antenna: have a look at http://www.qsl.net/dk7zb.
These
are rather good designs. You might consider to use a t-match with 0.5 lambda
balun feed, which give excellent match but that is somewhat more complicated
construction for starters.
In stead of the extra power, I would invest in a an extra antenna (vert.
stacked config)
and a decent pre-amp), but of course this is fully dependent of your
requirements.
