Oops! I forgot to mention this in the previous message. The manual gives 
the following connections:

tip - txd - pin 3
ring - rxd - pin 2
sleeve - gnd - pin 5

This is in case I could persuade someone with the one of the old cables 
to verify the above is correct. What I am afraid of is that the software 
from Icom may no longer work with serial cables now that they have been 
selling it with USB cables.
