Actually,
since the SWR meter in most common form is a bridge that shows a null; even
a well built, (short leads) monimatch type CB SWR meter is useable at 2m to
find the minimum SWR. It can be calibrated with non inductive, (carbon)
resistors and is often available at ham swap meets for bottom level prices,
since they are made for 5 watts CB rigs. Ideal for QRP rigs.
The best buy in a kit SWR/ Power meter that is spec'd to 2m and is actually
useable at 440, is the Ten Tec kit. Nice metal case, powered amplifier
circuit either by internal 9 volt battery or bench supply. Dual pick ups,
one for HF one for VHF/UHF. Power is measured in two ranges, and those can
be recalibrated. The 200 watt scale can be made a 20 watt scale, and 20
watt scale, 2 watts just by potentiometer recalibration adjustment against
known load.
