[2m] Re: [MO-ARES] GIS DATA?

Hello Glen. Here are some ideas. I worked in GIS before I became a ham,
but I no longer do that work.

1. APRS. The Sproul brothers (I forget their call) digitized TIGER maps of
EVERY US state by county. The layers include railroads, streams, and
virtually every road. These maps are available for free from TAPR. I use
mine with WinAprs, but it should work with Mac and Linux versions of APRS
as well. In my opinion, these maps are far superior from other data sets.
You could manipulate your data table to include buildings or other pertinent
geographic features, perhaps in ArcView or GRASS.

2. Contact geography faculty who are hams. At my alma mater, OU, the
geographer hams have all left (I think.) However, Prof. Jud Ahern, W5JA, is
a geophysics faculty member and sponsor of the W5TC (OU ARC). Maybe he
could he could direct you to some sources. Also, don't rule out the
University of Arkansas. After the Pierce City tornado, I met a member of
the CAST (applied GIS consortium at UA-Fayetteville), but I don't know
whether he's a ham or his name. His specialty is using GIS to reconstruct
storm paths and ground truth with storm damage. W5YM, UA ARC, might know
some people who can offer help. Unfortunately, I don't know the GIS
faculty at MU-Columbia. One of professors was a classmate at OU, but he's
not a GIS specialist. He works in another geographic specialty.

Good luck with your endeavor. If I can be of further assistance, please let
me know. j c K5DMI
