Hi Todd, Jim, and All
I enjoy using 222, as many times it can be quieter and less crowded than 2M. I have made contacts using SSB/CW out to about 500 miles under good conditions, and out to nearly 1000 miles using WSJT. WSJT requires much patience when using 222, as meteor pings are usually less strong than on 2M, and usually very short and quick. I currently have 27 grids on 222 with KR7O as one of them. I have also worked AF6O in DM14 on WSJT.
I believe that 222 is a fun band and often stations at around 140 miles or so are usually stronger on 222 than on 2M. If there is other activity near you, I would highly recommend 222. I have an FT-736R with a 222 module, so, I don't need a transverter (yet). I would say if there is any way you can get on 222, do it. It's a great DX band and can also help your score if you do any VHF/UHF contesting. Good luck and 73's.

Hi Jim.
When I was very active in the early to mid 90s on 222, yes, most activity was during contests, but this could change if folks would stop hesitating to gear up for the band due to lack of participation. The only reason for the lack of participation is that folks are afraid to invest in a dead band, it's a viscious circle...If 10% of all weak signal folks would gear up on 222 no matter what, activity could be fantastic!

Hello,
I'm considering buying an Elecraft transverter kit for the 222 MHz band,
to give me complete coverage of 50 Mhz->432 MHz.
Before taking this leap, though, I'd like to know if activity on this
band in this area warrants the expense.
I'd heard a rumor that the band was active mostly around contests.
All opinions are appreciated.
