Hi Bob & All:
My 2 cents on 220 HTs.
The Icom IC-xAT were a great family. They were rugged, reliable and low
battery drain. I was offered an IC-3SAT
(http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1866) this week. If you are interested,
I'll gladly connect you two.
I tend to favor Yaesu and have the FT-33. It is rugged has good specs AND
uses all the same accessories for my FT-73 (440) & FT-470 (2m & 70cm). They
all have more features than I'll ever need in Tucson. I see FT-33s with
some regularity on eBay. If you need CTCSS, those FTS-12 tone boards are
getting harder to find. I spent 8 months searching for one this year. They
also go in the FT-311, (a favorite 220 mobile).

My observations on the tribander. A new amateur family bought three of them
to cover all of their vhf/uhf needs. They quickly learned you need more
power to operate mobile and the HTs got too hot to operate after a few
overs. They also quickly discovered they could recieve all vhf & uhf
transmissions (amateur, govt. & commercial) simultaneously while on gain
antennas. It took several months for the concepts of sensitivity,
selectivity & image rejection to sink in. Now they are buying mobiles.
Although tribanders are convenient, they shouldn't be considered for more
than portable use. Selectivity and image rejection micro-technology has yet
to catch up with broadband receive technology.

As with all opinions expressed, keep in mind, one hour technical research &
comprehension exceeds 10 hours amateur advice.

Happy Turkey Day & 73 to All

Subject: [222mhz] 220 HT Advice

Hi Gang,

Ok,I have a mint 631A on the way:) Thanks to all for advise and offers.

I would like a good HT to go with it. I looked at the new Kenwood
tri-bander today and it was very nice except for the tinny recieve audio.
Audio quality is a big deal to me. I'm using a frind's IC-3AT right now
and it very pleasant to listen to.

I would like something a little more modern than the 3AT(no pl tones, no
display) but would like the nice audio.

Again I welcome all opinions and offers for sale!

73's
