[1000mp] Display Dead FT-1000MP

It was not a gradual dimming but a sudden loss of the display preceded by a faint smell of a hot component. Performance otherwise is ok. Before I dig in to inspect the inverter board anyone have ideas of what I'll likely find.  Anyone have experience with inverter boards sold on Ebay?  I'd rather not go the LED display replacement mod unless I have to.
