Keep in mind that understanding speech is not about HiFi. Speech is about
intelligibility, the understanding of voice communications, the capability
to understand the words even if the voice is not recognized to a particular
person. The speaker used with the hf radio is as important to understand
speech as the rest of the features in an hf radio.

HiFi speakers used for communications makes voice intelligibility more
difficult for the ears / brain to sort. The wider range audio spectrum
challenges your ears to sort / filter to the audio that contains the
voice you want to make out - the speech that you want to understand.

Intelligibility of speech lies more in the higher part of the voice
spectrum than the lower. The trick to intelligibility when using narrower
bandwidth is to shift the bandpass some to reduce the low frequency portion
of the voice and enhance the higher (no this is not about the tone control).
It is also why it is important that transmitted signals contain good high
end performance with less low end. Other wise the lower frequency portion of
the audio uses up more of the transmitted signal power and not only reduces
the "intelligibility' transmission range, but leaves the higher end of the
voice range less effective. Try copying a bassy station when marginal, and
the same station with less bass and more highs in the voice.

If you can find and acquire a HeathKit HS-1661 speaker, I highly suggest
you do it. 300 - 3000 Hz is a great voice speaker with out all the 'hifi".
My ham station uses two of these speakers, one on either side of me. The
only improvement I have found left, is to use communication headphones
with a similar frequency range ..... not hifi range.
