From indigo at centurylink.net Sun Apr 16 13:19:00 2017 From: indigo at centurylink.net (Marcia Stockton) Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2017 11:19:00 -0600 Subject: [1000mp] main tuning knob seized up, cannot remove ring to access set screw and lubrication points Message-ID: <07a40b38-9b4d-da3a-4a4b-0cb8ae14a500@centurylink.net> Years ago I received a pre-owned FT1000-mp from an SK pal. The rig has been fantastic. Just now a problem occurred that I haven't been able to solve via manuals and internet research. During a contest the formerly-silky-smooth main VFO tuning knob became stiff, then very very stiff, and now it is almost impossible to turn. The manual describes a knob torque adjustment procedure that looks straightforward, but isn't, because I cannot do step 1: removing the outer "knurled rubber ring" using your fingers in order to access an Allen-wrench set-screw and/or lubrication points. I cannot remove that outer ring, and am not willing to pry it off with a tool until I know what I'm doing. No amount of normal finger pressure will budge it. I am wondering if possibly my rig has an after-market tuning knob which differs from Yaesu's technical specs, or maybe I am just doing it wrong... ? Would really appreciate suggestions from anybody who has dealt with tuning knob issues. Many thanks and 73 de N0RET Marcia P.S. For tuning, my fallback is the outer ring, with final fine tuning using computer up and down arrows via the N1MM Band Map. Actually this works pretty well but it is DIFFERENT and would still like to put the hardware back into perfect condition and tune it in the usual way. Here's a status update. (1) Removing the rubber ring was straightforward, after seeing the exploded parts diagram and understanding that it wasn't the shuttle jog ring to be removed, but rather a knob-shaped rubber cap enclosing the main tuning knob. (2) Lubrication of the tuning/encoder/bushing/shaft gizmo: I have worked and worked on that shaft with light oil, WD-40 penetrating oil (containing petroleum distillate which ought to seep into the bushing by capillary action), and Q-tips to wick out the dirty lube one drop at a time, and the knob can now be turned without difficulty, but it still has resistance and will not spin freely with one finger as it previously did. (Like the VFO-B knob still does.) I had given up doing anything further, but Tom's idea to tilt the rig so it can flow by gravity is intriguing and worth another round of effort. It may come down to replacing the gizmo, if I cannot tolerate the way it is working. N1MM's up arrow, down arrow CAT fine tuning method has been a helpful workaround during these hardware problems. Rather than sending the radio in for repair, I bought both boards and replaced them in the radio. That fixed the problem. In case that happened again, I bought both spares. A year ago I sold the 1000MP so no longer need the spares. Replacement cost for both is over $400 ten years ago. You can call Yaesu and find out the current cost. I can sell you these spares for $250 including shipping and I take PayPal. I kept the instructions and will include them. The replacement is not that difficult.
