Thanks Mark, I did almost the same thing except had a friend about 10 miles away listen and I made the changes and surprisingly enough he said that I sounded normal with all the settings you just mentioned EDSP off and the two switches in the position you mentioned.

I remembered why I had EDSP in position 2 and that is because the manual says that is the best position for pileups.  Maybe, maybe not.

Hi all,

I’ve done quite a bit of “fooling around” with the transmitted audio on my Mark 5. Here’s what I did to hear it myself. I have another rig, an FT1000Delta, which I had in receive mode, attenuator on 18db, no antenna switched to it. I used minimal power out on the Mark 5. The receive rig was attached to my “ham computer” by way of the “audio out” RCA jack on the back to the MIC input on my computer. The computer is running Windows XP Pro. I ran the “applet” sound recorder, you’ll find it under “Programs, Accessories, Entertainment”. Check all the appropriate adjustments, like mic level, boost if you need it. You can get to these adjustments by double clicking on the little speaker on the task bar. The mic adjustment may even be “muted” by default. Un-check the little box to turn the mic on. 
After you’re all set up, click on “Record” button on the Sound Recorder and quickly key up your Mark 5 or MP or any other rig for that matter! You’ll only have a “few” seconds, but that’s enough. I transmitted this: N8TCQ testing audio, this is setting 4 on the edsp, mike on thru. test, test, test. N8TCQ. Did the same for all the DSP settings including “off”. Make sure you save each file after you finish the recordings. You can then play them back one at a time to hear for yourself what you’ll sound like on the air. I found mine to be best with the EDSP off and the MD100 desk mike set with “High Emphasis” on but Bass filter off. I’ve been told I have a pretty good voice on the air and that was before I adjusted things. A friend of mine has a rather raspy high pitched voice and I helped him with the settings on his FTdx-9000 in this fashion and he gets a lot of compliments on his audio. I made notes also of each recording so I could switch to a less “bassy” sound for working contests and/or DX. Try it, I think it’ll help.
