This seems to have cured the problem.  Thanks to all.  I'll still  look for 
a backup FT-1000.
 
 Rod, check the  “jog/shuttle” ring around the main tuning knob. I have 
seen cases reported that  involved the ring’s contacts  getting dirty or the 
ring not returning to the center position; leading to an  actual “scan” 
mode. If I remember correctly, a couple of those case were solved  just by 
working the ring back & forth a few times, which makes sense  if you don’t ever
