[1000mp] FW: Problems on 18 and 21 Mhz

Kuipers,

I had a similar problem with my MP (except my problem affected 7 MHz, 10 MHz
and 14 MHz) and some knowable guys suggested that I check the local
oscillator board (located under the antenna tuner in your MP). There are
apparently well known problems with deteriorated solder connections around
some of the inductors. You can download the relevant portions of the
service manual from the web that will show where the board is located and
which of the areas on the board apply to your particular problem (when
looking at the board as it is mounted in the MP, the area to begin checking
would on the underside of the end closest to rear end of the transceiver).
I struggled with mine and it's now working -- it definitely was a poor
solder connection. As I worked on it, I got frustrated and bought a new
board from Yaesu (about $300) but when installed it wouldn't work in my MP
-- I'm guessing that there were various manufacturing changes and the board
they sent probably applied to another version -- it just wouldn't
communicate with the processor so I had to rely on re-soldering the joints.

The board can be dismounted from the transceiver while still connected. To
attempt to locate the problem area, you can GENTLY flex the board while it's
operation. Leave an antenna connected to the tuner and, if you find the
problem, the noise level will suddenly rise and you may again hear signals.
The data in the service manual contains information on how to align the
board -- it's not complicated but you'll need a high impedance voltmeter and
maybe a frequency counter -- I don't recall for sure. If you find and fix
a poor solder connection, you may NOT have to adjust the alignment so don't
worry about it if things start working again.

Let me know if I can be of help.

73s and good luck,

Dave Cohen, N7TC
