[1000mp] RS 232 Problem

Dear George WA4GT: The sensitivity to damage of the 232 chip in the FT1000
rigs is one of the well known "features" of the family.
1. An extensive search was made of plug-in chips on the reasonable basis
that something that is going to need replacement should be easy to replace.
Unfortunately, I was not able to find a reasonable way to mount a socket.
If it had been my design, more room would have been allocated on the board
and replacement of this vulnerable chip facilitated. Alternatively,
isolators should have been part of the design.
2. External isolator boxes do exist, but have a cost and may not be
completely effective.
3. A pin-for-pin replacement chip does exist that has been designed to be
more rugged. 202E is what I remember about its part number. I do have a
copy of its data sheet, if you are interested.
4. Heavy use of common mode chokes is recommended around the cable between
rig and computer. A "green" wire from computer case to earthing buss and a
second "green" wire from the rig to the earthing buss is recommended.
Let us all know what you ended up doing. 73, Mac N8TT
