Hi Bob, and thanks for the response.

I don't think it's the squelch in this case, since I can turn the 
squelch up and observe that it becomes active, and then inactive when I 
turn the control down, and I normally leave the knob completely 
counter-clockwise.  The situation you describe sounds more like a bad 
relay contact, especially if it's band-dependent at all.  My back-up 
1kMP has this problem on 80m.  Also see my answer to Garry with respect 
to the antenna selection.
