Mark,
Many MP and Mk.V owners, if not most, add Inrad filters in preference to
the Yaesu offerings.. The choice of 500, 400 or 250 Hz bandwidth is
yours. If there is already one stock filter, e.g. a 500 Hz mechanical
filter in the 2nd IF, whether to leave it in place or replace it is also
your choice; it is broader than the crystal filters. Some of the stock
filters are soldered in, while all the optional slots are plug-in. Your
choice should be governed by:
* whether you primarily ragchew, DX or contest
* whether your pocketbook can afford two filters or three or four or
more.
If you contest or otherwise operate on crowded bands, a roofing filter
can make a dramatic difference. This added filter goes ahead of the
first IF (70 MHz), eseentially bypassing the stock 15kHz ceramic filter,
and can dramatically improve performance in the presence of very strong
adjacent-channel signals. If total cash outlay is an issue, a roofing
filter and a 400 or 500 Hz 3rd IF filter would give you maximum bang for
your buck, and you can add more filters as your wallet allows.
In my case--two standard MP's--for the "500 Hz" position I chose a 400
Hz 3rd IF,leaving the stock 500 Hz 2nd IF filter in place, and then
added 250 Hz filters in both IF's for the "250 Hz" position. I also
installed roofing filters. I found the 400 Hz to be fine for contesting,
although some ops prefer to go wider. The 250 Hz filters are good for
very weak signal DXing, e.g. 160m.
