This sounds very much like a well-reported problem. I was one of those
reporting it, after it appeared during a DXpedition to 3B9 in 1999, of
which I was a team member. In my case, the dropout seemed deeper than 2
or 3 S units. I sent my MP to Yaesu on warranty, with a written,
detailed description how to induce the condition. The technician said he
could not do so, but replaced a bunch of parts and the problem went away
for several years before returning. The source is almost certainly a DIP
relay in the front end. In my case, a brief excursion into transmit mode
always restored RX signal. Yaesu, to my knowledge, never acknowledged
the problem, although it has been discussed on this list numerous times.

I suggest you contact Byron, WA4GEG at his qrz.com address. Byron is
extremely competent and professional and I recommend him highly. That
problem was one of several that Byron addressed for me; there are more
than a half-dozen of the same relay in the front end, and he replaced
all of them.
