Hello Jerry,
My first attempt was to reflow the tuner PCB but without success.
Then I initiated to measure the signals and voltages and had seen that the
communication between the radio and tuner was made via serial. The lines are
SA and SB on J5002 on the CNTL-UNIT.
I placed a osciloscope in these two lines and the signals apparently were
good. I followed the wiring until the tuner and the signals were there too.
Some time ago, I worked with serial communications and learned that the
speed tolerance was some narrow. Then I thought what could be happening to
cause speed errors, and the clock generator came in my mind. It was only
luck to have thought about this
After I was direct to measure the frequency of the CPU clock and found
sufficiently far from what it had to be. I was very happy and fortunately I
have another crystal to change. BINGO! Everything came back to the normal.
To certify I came back to the original crystal and the problem returned,
confirming that the cause of the problem was really the crystal.
In reality I called crystal but it is a 25MHz ceramic resonator, labeled
CO5001 on the CNTL-UNIT diagram.
It was an uncommon failure therefore never had seen this type of problem in
this type of part.
An yes, I hope to see you on the air some day!
73,
Marcus - PP5MS
