Ed:  I think you might be on the right track....I ran across a piece on 
the web by KA1BXB (Don).  He has had interesting experiences with the 
FP-29 under repair suggesting that poweriing up the supply is a high 
stress period and can lead to abrupt failure.

My stock power supply for the MP Mark 5 is still working fb. I've had 
the rig now for about a year & I never turn my power supply off. Just 
wondering what others do ? I am under impression that turning ps on/off 
will shorten life of the backup lithium battery in the rig ?
