Unfortunately, that's the way it is. It's very difficult to deal with when driving an external amp. I found that power output was lower and more controllable when I set the Mark V and the transverter to Class A output. However, I later read that running Class A in anything less than full output wasn't advisable due to heating issues, so I stopped doing that.
