Everyone who owns a 1000MP knows that making the changeover from AC to DC operation is time-consuming, and exposes the front panel to possible damage.

While my MP was opened up to install an IF filter, I studied the connector arrangement and reviewed the schematics. It boils down to the fact that a DPDT switch could replace the two panel connectors and the plug. However, I didn’t want to do any mod that would affect resale so I compromised. I still use the connector arrangement, but my “mod” lets me remove just the top cover of the MP to make the AC-to-DC changeover.

First I followed the manual instructions for dropping the front panel. Then I unplugged the cable plug from the upper (AC) panel connector. I unsnapped each of the two panel connectors from the bracket that holds them, and raised and angled them upwards so they rest side by side against the top edge of the bracket. I labeled the AC and DC connectors accordingly. Then I routed the cable plug over top of that bracket and plugged it into the desired connector. Finally I reattached the front panel and reinstalled the bottom and top covers.

Now I just have to remove the top cover to gain access to the connectors and the plug, and it’s quick work to move the plug from one connector to the other. When (if) I decide to sell the MP, one more total cover and front panel removal will be required, to snap the two connectors back into the bracket and plug in the cable plug.

Or maybe when my MP gets really old I'll install that switch, along with a hole in the side panel and a snap-in hole cover to finish the job.
